在常用词action中，有个英语中最重要的名词后缀-ion，它来自拉丁语，只能加缀在拉丁动词词干或拉丁借词上，构成相应的名词，其意思相当于the act or process of 〜ing，the result of 〜ing，the condition of being ~ed, a thing that 〜s 等，即表示某一动作的过程、结果与状态，以及与该行为有关的事物。由于拉丁构词规律的影响， -ion 有-ation，-ition，-ution 等异体，但它们的用法与意义与-ion并无区别。
先介绍几个具有代表性的含-ion的派生名词。
attraction [ attract v. 吸引； -ion→] n. the act or power of attracting 吸引;吸引力 / The attraction of the bright headlight made the deer stop in the road. 明亮的汽车前灯光吸引得那只鹿停在公路中间。/ Sports have great attraction for most boys. 运动对多数男孩有很大的吸引力。
calculation [calculat (和 calculate) v. 计算；-ion→]n.① the act or process of calculating 计算/ We made a careful calculation of what the trip would cost us. 我们仔细计算了这次旅行的费用。② the result found by calculating 计算结果 / Our first calculation was wrong, but the second was correct. 我们第一次得数是错误的，第二次是对的。
collection [collect v. 收集；-ion→“the result of collecting 收集的结果”→]n. a group of things gathered from many places 收集物，收藏品 / Our library has a large collection of books. 我们的图书馆藏书量很大。
fascination [ fascinat ( ←fascinate) v. 迷住；-ion→ ] n. the condition of being fascinated 迷恋，强烈爱好 / The girl's fascination with television programms worried her parents very much. 那小女孩迷上了电视节目，父母大为担忧。
connection [connect v. 连接；-ion→] n.① the act of connecting连接，联系/ The connection of our telephone took several hours. 我们的电话花了好几个小时才接通。②a thing that connects 连接物 / The connection between the radiator and the pipe has become loose.汽车水箱与管道之间的连接件巳经松动。
