在superman (超人）中有个很常用的前缀super-，其前身是拉丁介副词super，意为above或over (在…之上）。在英语中， super-既可以作为原生前缀存在拉丁借词中，也可以作为派生前缀跟名词、形容词及动词相缀合，构成许多常用词。在与单词结合时，的含义除了 above之外，还引申出beyond (超）； more that (多）;excessive (过分）等意思。与结合的单词， 多是拉丁借词，本族语词较少。这些派生词都出现在17世纪。 此外，在构词过程，派生前缀—般不改变词基单词的词性。
先介绍原生词缀与词根构成的几个有代表性的常用词。
superficial [ super- = above 在…之上；fici = face 面；-al = being “being above the face 在面上”→]a. ①of or on the surface 表面的 / His burns were superficial and soon healed. 他只是表面烧伤，很快就好了。②not thorough; shallow肤浅的；浅薄的 / Girls used to receive only a superficial education. 过去女孩子往往只受到粗浅的教育。
superficies n. 表面；外观，外表
superficiality n. 表面性；肤浅，浅薄
superfluous [super- = over 超；flu = to flow 流；-ous = -ing=>“flowing over 溢出的”→]a . more than is needed; surplus, unnecessary 过剩的；多余的，不必要的/ In writing telegram it pays to omit superfluous words. 拟电报稿时，将不必要的字眼 刪去比较合算。
superfluity n. 多余，过剩；奢侈
