only if 和 if only，调换顺序意思大不同！

不少同学搞不清 only if 和 if only 的区别，因为长得太像了，仅仅顺序调换了一下。

今天就给大家好好梳理一下其中的差别。

一、

我们都知道if最常用来表示条件，当在其前加上only，only if 用来强调，或表示“唯一条件”，也就是“前提”，可以翻译为“前提是”、“只有”、“除非”：

1. I'll tell you, but only if you don't tell anyone else.

我会告诉你，但前提是你不告诉别人。

2. Only if somebody can come up with a way to turn back the clock.

除非有人能想出办法让时光倒流。

3. Education works only if the recipients really want it.

教育只有在受教育者真正想要的时候才有效。

4. Only if one believes in something can one act purposefully.

只有当一个人相信某事时，他才会果断行动。

*注意：only if 从句在句首时，主句用倒装句结构。

二、

再来看 if only，它表达希望或愿望，翻译成“要是…就好了”，相当于 I wish：

1. If only he would listen to me.

他要是听我的话就好了。

2. If only I knew her name.

我要是知道她的名字就好了。

3. If only I had known you then.

要是我那时候认识你就好了。

4. If only I'd had one of them, it seems I could have had success, fulfilled my dreams.

如果我有其中的一个，我似乎可能已经成功实现我的梦想。
