复旦大学创建于1905年，原名复旦公学。“复旦” 二字出自《尚书大 传•虞夏传》中《卿云歌》之名句“日月光华，旦复旦兮”。

一个世纪以来，复旦以其爱国进步、民主科学的精神积极参与并有力地推进了民族的现代化事业，并且以其“博学而笃志，切问而近思”[1] 的治学态度铸造了取精用宏的学术思想，陶冶了一代又一代怀抱超旷的才隽学人，为祖国 的社会主义建设事业培养了一大批栋梁之材。

Fudan University was founded in 1905, its original name being Fudan Public School. The phrase“Fudan”，meaning“the morning sun rising again”，can be etymologically traced back to Book of History, the most ancient Chinese book, in which there is such a poetic line: Brilliant is the sunlight and the moonlight, again the morning glory after a night.

Over the past one hundred years, Fudan University, while holding high the banners of patriotism, progress, democracy and science, has played an active role in helping promote China’s modernization drive. The university's motto ilTo pursue a wide scope of learning while sticking to one's chosen aspiration, and to raise.
