言及“年”的表达,人们自然联想到year,如：Ten years is a long time.I have been here two years today.其实,英语在表达“年”这个时间概念时不一定是使用year这个词，现介绍如下：
1. 用表示季节的名词来取代year，汉语有以“春秋”表示“年”的习惯，英语却使用“夏”(summer)及“冬”（winter)。如：
This became clear to me two summers ago while I was walking with my 25-year-old son.
两年前,我和二十五岁的儿子一起散步时,终于明白了这一点。
It happened many winters ago.
此事发生在许多年之前。
2.用表示人的生命发展期的名词来取代year,generation（一代人）常用以表示三十年（左右）的时间，lifetime（一生）则表示“百年”。
The automobile was introduced in America during the generation before World War I.
汽车是在第一次世界大战前二三十年引入美国的。
Only a lifetime ago, parents waved farewell to their emigrating children,knowing they would never see them again.
仅在百年之前,父母亲们挥手向他们移居他国的孩子们告别，知道自己再也见不到他们了。
3. 用表示星体或自然现象的名词取代year，如sun，snows等。
The thoughts of men are widened with the process of the suns.
人的思想随着岁月的迁流而得以拓宽。
又如：
a thousand suns ago一千年前
forty snows ago四十年前
4. 有关十年、一百年及一千年的表达，英语中有便捷的固定说法。如：
The construction of this railway lasted a decade.
这条铁路的修建为时十年之久。（decade还可以表示“数十年”的时间概念，如several decades)
For the last three centuriles, Western civilization had dedicated a good part of its energies to the invention of machines and the extension of their operations into every corner of life.
在最近的三百年中,西方文明国家致力于发明机器及将其使用范围扩大到生活的每个角落。
The Christian Era is less than two millenniums old; the world is many millenniums old.
公元还不到两千年，而世界却存在许多个千年了。（“一千年”英语表达的单数形式是millennium）
