长期以来，由于我国在专有名词的翻译中缺乏统一规定，所以存在着专有名词翻译的混乱情况。新中国成立以后，虽然制定了不少有关规则，但由于无法一下全部重新出版过去的书籍并订正译名，在阅读早期的有关译作、著作时不免遇到这种混乱情况。如：
Sir Isaac' Newton 奈端（现译：牛顿）
Pushkin 普式庚（现译：普希金）
Chekhov 柴霍甫（现译：契诃夫）
Chicago 诗家谷/支加野（现译：芝加哥）
Gogol 鄂戈里/郭戈里/果歌里/歌郭里（现译：果戈里）
Victor Hugo 器俄/许俄（现译：雨果）
Balzac 白尔石克（现译：巴尔扎克）
Shakespeare 狹斯丕尔（现译：莎士比亚）
连现在的ー些普通名词，早先也有各种各样听来颇怪的译名，如：
logic逻辑学：严复译为“名学”；孙中山译成“理则学”
abstraction抽象：马相怕译为“玄摘”
philosophy哲学:马相伯译为“致知”；蔡元培译为“道”
liberty 自由：严复曾译为“里勃而特”
freedom自由：严复曾译为“伏利当”'
president 总统：最先有人译成“普利玺天德”（“伯里玺天德”）
分析起来，造成这种混乱有哪些具体原因呢？解放以来，我国采取了什么措施来消除这种混乱呢？为什么要采取这些措施呢？让我们引用以下几段英文来回答这些问题。为帮助读者更好地理解这几段英文，对某些较难的部分特注出适当的汉译。
This great confusion comes, as we analyse all the cases, from ①the transliteration of all proper names from the English spelling and English pronunciation,② the variation in the spoken sound of the Chinese characters used in the translated names, ③the great number of homonyms in Chinese, and ④the mixed use of the old and new translated names. For remedy, let us try to set up three rules for our translators；
① Follow the pronunciation of the owners of proper names;(名从主人）
② Use the standard pronunciation of the Chinese character;(标准汉音）
③ Adopt the established popular translated names.(约定俗成）
