1. 当or连接两个对等成分，如词或短语，表示“选择”概念时，可译为“或”、“或者”等，或用汉语的顿号代替，或按汉语的习惯而译。如：
* Gears are used to increase or decrease the speed and torque of shafts.
齿轮用来增大或减小转轴的速度或转矩。
* Thus work is done when a weight is lifted, or a spring is stretched, or a gas is compressed in a cylinder.
因而当一重物被举起时，或一弹簧被拉伸时，或气体在气缸中被压缩时，也就做了功。
2. 当or连接两个同义词或同义短语，或同一事物的不同表达时，or可译为“即”、“也就是”、“等于”等。如：
* Oxidized metals can be reduced, or separated from nonmetals, and in that way be made pure again.
氧化了的金属可以还原，也就是可以和非金属分离，从而又变成纯金属。
* Glass and rubber are non-conductors or insulators.
玻璃和橡胶是非导体，即绝缘体。
3. 当or连接的短语表示让步概念时，可译为“不论”。如：
* The parts, square or rectangular, should be ground to fit the seat snugly in order to avoid leakage of the fluid.
这些零件，不论是方形的还是矩形的，均应磨削使其与安装座紧密结合，以防漏油。
