英语的长句如果汉译后句子过长，不符合汉语表达习惯，那就可以考虑采用断句的译法，把原来一个长句割断成两个或三个（一般是两个）句子来译，选择原句中的前后意思关系疏松或显示出两回事的地方（一般是在其中的句与句之间的地方)割断。但要注意割断成两句或三句来译后， 务使后句译文同前句有意思上和文句上的联系，因为原句是一个句子，在意思上和文句上都是有着一定的相互联系的。对英语的长句，采用断句译法并非少见。尽管是这样， 但翻译时还得小心考虑，以免把
原意割断。
例句：
1. Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.
幸亏这喊声吵醒了我的妻子。正当警察已经开始朝着我爬上来时，我的妻子就把这个窗子打开了。
〔解说〕这句割断成两句译出，后一译句用名词重复先行词的译法同前句连接起来。
2. Finally，sparing neither labour nor expense，I succeeded in constructing for myself so excellent an instrument that objects seen by means of it appeared nearly one thousand times larger，and over thirty times closer, than when observed with our natural vision.
最后，我既不遗余力，又不惜工本，为自己成功地制造了一台出色的仪器。用这台仪器看到的物体与用肉眼观看的相比，放大了近千倍，距离近了三十多倍。
3. He knew that his papa had been an Englishman， because his mamma had told him so;but then his papa had died when he was so little a boy that he could not remember very much about him，except that he was big ，and had blue eyes and a long moustache,and that it was a splendid thing to be carried around the room on his shoulder.

从前有个俊俏的年轻人，名叫拉姆•辛格。虽然人人都最喜欢他，但他仍感到闷闷不乐，因为他有一位说话尖刻、唠叨不休的继母。
