而在中国的文化中，最受欢迎的动物是龙(dragon)和凤凰(phoenix)，“龙”在我国历史上是一个图腾形象。在我国古代传说中，龙是能兴云降雨的神异动物，在封建时代，龙作为皇帝的象征，凤作为皇后的象征，中国人是龙的传人。汉语中与龙和凤有关的成语比比皆是：
望子成龙 longing to see one’s son become a dragon, that is, be successful
龙肝凤胆rare delicacies
龙飞凤舞like dragon flying and phoenixes dancing-- lively and vigorous flourishes in calligraphy
龙凤呈祥the dragon and the phoenix bringing prosperity—excellent good fortune
龙生龙，凤生凤dragons beget dragons, phoenixes beget phoenixes—each after its kind
