名词后缀-ery来自法语，它主要充当派生后缀，可以加在两类单词后面：1)加在动词后面表不a place for〜ing (做…的场所）；2)加在名词后，这时-ery的意思较为复杂，它可以表示a place for 〜s (…的场所）;the art or occupation of a 〜（…的技艺）；the condition, quality or action of a 〜（…的状况、性质、行为），以及a group of〜s (…的群体或集体）。在少数情况下，也可以当原生后缀。
下面，举些有代表性的词例来说明派生后缀-ery的用法。
bakery [bak (← bake) v. 烤、烘（面包等）；-ery=>“a place for baking 烤面包的场所”→]n. a place where bread, cake and pies are made or sold; bakeshop 面包烘房；面包店/We bought a cake at the bakery for dessert. 我们在面包房买了一块蛋糕做甜点心用。
nunnery [nun n. 修女，尼姑；-ery=>“a place for nuns 尼姑们的住处”→]n. a building where nuns live; convent 女修道院；尼姑庵 / She said that she should take up her abode in a nunnery. 她说她将要去女修道院居住。
cookery [ cook n. 厨师；-ery →] n. the art or occupation of a cook 烹调术 / Besides television, their major diversion is cookery. 除了看电视，他们主要的消遣就是学烹调。
slavery [slav (←slave) n. 奴隶；-ery=>“the condition of a slave 奴隶的状态”→]n. ① the condition or fact of being a slave 奴隶身份/ Many African Blacks were captured and sold into slavery. 许多非洲黑人被捕获并贩卖为奴。②the custom of owning slaves 奴隶制度 / Where slavery is permitted, certain men own others. 允许奴隶制度存在的地方，一些人就人身占有了另一些人。
knavery [knav (←knave) n. 流氓；-ery=>“ the qualities or actions of a knave 流氓的秉性与行为”→]n. behaviour of a knave; trickery 流氓行为；欺诈 / It is a flat knavery to take upon you another man's name. 用他人名字顶替你是纯粹的流行径。
machinery [machin (←machine) n. 机器；-ery→]n. a group of machines [总称] 机器，机械 / A factory contains much machinery. 一家工厂拥有很多机器。
