科技翻译避免违反一致性原则

我们知道，英语主语与谓语、代词与其先行词在性、数上以及一些主从复合句在时态上都要保持一致，否则就会造成违反一致性原则的语法错误。
一、代词与名词不一致
代词与名词在性、数、格上保持一致，是英语语法的一条重要原则。这种一致性至少包括以下三种情况：一种是代词与其先行词保持-致；第二种是指示代词与所修饰的名词保持一致；第三种是不定代词与名同保持一致。在科技英语中，主要是代词与名词数的一致性容易发生错误，即代词与其先行词、指示代词与所修饰的名词在数上不一致。
(―)代词与其先行词不一致
例如： If one had considered the consequences carefully, you would not have agreed to sign the contract. [如果当初认真考虑一下后果的话，谁都不会同意在那合同上签字。]
原英译中的通称代词one作为人称代词时应为第三人称单数，但在主句中却变为表示通称的第二人称代词you，即与其先行词不一致。根据语法规则，应加以统一，使二者在人称上保持一致。
改译 1: If one had considered the consequences carefully, he would not have agreed to sign the contract.
改译 2: If you had considered the consequences carefully, you would not have agreed to sign the contract.
(二）指示代词与其所修饰的名词不一致
例如：In these literature the mechanism of secretion are rarely dealt with.[上述文献对分泌的机理很少报道。]
显然，例中的指示代词these与其所修饰的名词literature的数是不一致的。原译试图用these literature这种“指示代词十名词”结构来代上文巳提到的事物（即文献），以期达到the literature(the+名词）所不能达到的特指作用。但却违反了代词与名词一致性的语法规则。由于literature是不可数的，我们不妨用the literature as mentioned above或the above-mentioned literature 来实现特指的目的。
上例中除代词与名词不一致外，还存在主谓不一致和时态使用不当的错误。
改译1： The above-mentioned literature rarely dealt with the mechanism of secretion.
当然也可以保留被动态。
改译2： In the above-mentioned literature, the mechanism of secretion was rarely dealt with.
(三）不定代词与名词不一致
例如： Few of result obtained from the present experiment is consistent with those of the previous studies. [本实验结果很少与前人的一致。]
在本例中，尽管不定代词Few为否定意思，表示“几乎没有”，但仍是复数概念。因此，与之相应的名词也应为复数。
改译 1: Few of results obtained from the present experiment are consistent with those of the previous studies.
改译 2: Little result obtained from the present experiment is consistent wiih those of the previous studies.
二、主语与谓语不一致
英语的主语与谓语的一致性主要表现在人称及数的一致（在科技英语中主要是数的一致性）。这是英语中最基本的语法规则，但在科技英译的实践中经常看到主、谓不一致的错误。主、谓不一致包括以下几种情况。
(一）单数主语用复形谓语
例如：Results of cytological examination of the pollen mother cells at meiosis and observation of the morphological characters of the adult revealed that only 2 lines were true hybrids whose chromosome numbers were 2n = 4x = 36, and whose chromosome pairing at the metaphase I of meiosis were irregular. [经形态学和细胞学鉴定，有两个株系是杂种，其染色体数均为2n = 4x = 36，花粉母细胞减数分裂中期I染色体配对不正常。]
