D. 时间顺序
由于汉语主要是一种意合式的语言，信息的排列常常依照事件发生的先后顺序， 先发生的事先说，后发生的事后说。因此，吋间顺序是汉语语序排列的一个重要规律。例如：
(7) 她每天放学后做作业、打猪草、做饭。
(8) 那周瑞家的又和智能儿唠叨了一回，便往凤姐处来，穿过了夹道子，从李纨后窗下越过西花墻，出西角门，进风姐院中。（曹雪芹《红楼梦》）
(9) 雨来得快，走得也快。(比较:The rain goes as fast as it comes.)
(10) 任务今天完不成，我们明天接着干。（比校：We will continue with our work tomorrow if we can not finish it today.)
而英语却常常不依照时间顺序，事件的时间顺序可以通过表示时间先后的连词、动词的时态变化、分词结构、不定式结构等表示出来；甚至，英语有时习惯于把最近的事情先叙述，再追述最远的事件，所以，英汉互译时，常常要依照各自的语言习惯对语序进行重新调整。例如：
(11) No one will deny that what we have been able to do in the past five years is especially striking in view of the crisis which we inherited from the previous government. (will deny —is 一have been able to do 一 inherited)
为了解决上ー届政府遗留下来的危机问题，我们付出了整整五年的努力，取得了卓越的成果，这一点是无法否认的。(inherited—have been able to do—is—will deny)
(12) Today has seen the practical fulfillment of the historic decision taken on 25 October 1971, when the General Assembly voted to restore to the People's Republic of China its lawfuf rights in this organization. 1971 年 10 /] 25 日，联合国大会投票恢复中华人民共和国在这ー组织中的合法权利，这ー历史性决定，今天付诸实施了。
(13) ①凤姐还欲问时，②只听二门上传来云板，③连叩四下，④将凤姐惊醒。（曹雪芹《红楼梦》)
① Before Xifeng could ask more she ④was woken ②with a start by ③four blows in the chime bar at the second gate.
总之，汉语复句多取意合式；英语复句多取形合式。比较而言，次要部分在英语复句常取后置式，在汉语中常取前置式；主要部分在汉语中倾向于后置，在英语复句中前置后置都可能。复句的两个部分是前置还是后置的问题，主要根据惯用法和重心感，只是一种大体倾向，毕竟，两种语言在对比中会有同有异。此外，是前置还是后置也与行文中的语气和衔接很有关系。这种种因素都使得语序具有相当的灵活性，不能强调强制性。
