杨译：
The maid laughed mockingly.
"There are plenty of us you haven't seen. I'm not the only one by any means. How could you know me? I don't fetch and carry for you, or wait on you personally. "
霍译：
She replied with some bitterness:
'There are quite a few of us you've never seen. I'm not the only one, by any means. How could you have seen me? I've never been allowed to wait on you or show myself in your presence.'
这是小红回答宝玉的一句话。秋纹、碧痕等不让她递茶水，拿东西，使她近不得宝玉跟前，所以宝玉不认识她。作者将“茶水”拆开，镶嵌入“递”字，合成“递茶递水”;“东西”拆开，镶嵌人“拿”字，合成“拿东拿西”，这两个拼集起来的词，通过延音加力的作用，表现了小红对宝玉和怡红院大丫头们的讽刺意味和事不遂心、怀才不遇的心情。
在这里，我们已经注意到，像“递茶递水”、“拿东拿西”这样的词语，与拆词镶嵌之前的“递茶水”、“拿东西”相比，在修辞效果上类似于反复。也就是说，从某种意义上讲，这种辞格是通过延音手段来反复强调，从而起到加强语势语气，突出话语效果作用的。因此，即使不能在译文中以同类辞格的形式再现原文风貌，也可以通过语意的重叠达到近似的功效。根据以上分析，杨译中的fetch与carry，霍译中的 wait on you 与 show myself in your presence 都有语意重复的意味，都符合原作者的表达初衷。
3) 芳官见了这般，便说他偏心，“把你女儿剩水给我洗。我一个月的月钱都是你拿着，沾我的光不算，反倒给我剩东剩西的。”（第五十八回）
杨译：
Fangguan accused her of showing favouritism.
"So I'm to wash with the water your daughter has used, am I?" she complained. "You grab my whole monthly allowance, and on top of taking advantage of me like that expect me to be content with other people's leavings!"
霍译：
When Parfumee noticed this, she was loud in protest.
'What, give me the water your daughter's washed in? Considering you take the whole of my monthly allowance, I think I deserve better than left-overs!'
