Dong Shu

(The Pulsation of Arteries)

Yellow Emperor said:"In the twelve channels, there are only the Hand Taiyin Channel of Lung, the Foot Shaoyin Channel of Kidney and the Foot Yangming Channel of Stomach have the unceasing pulsations of the arteries, and what is the reason?" Qibo said:“This is due to the Foot Yangming Channel of Stomach associates with the pulsation of the pulse. The stomach is the convergent location of the energies of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, the fresh air converted by the refined substances of the food ascends to pour into the lung, and the air which starts from the Hand Taiyin Channel spreads to the whole body. The air of the lung operates up and down by the inhalation and the exhalation, and when one exhales once, the pulse pulsates twice, and when one inhales once, the pulse pulsates twice also, when the respiration carries on unceasingly, the pulsation of the Cunkou pulse will not stop."

Yellow Emperor said:"When the channel energy of Hand Taiyin passes the Cunkou, it rests when it ascends to reach the lung, and hides when it descends to reach the finger's tips. From what place will it return to its own channel of Hand Taiyin? I don't know its reason." Qibo said: “When the channel energy divorces from the internal organs inside to reach the channels outside, it is irresistable like the arrow shot from the bow or the torrent wates rushing down the cliff. When the channel energy ascends to reach the hand thenear eminence, it turns weaker, when the remainder energy reverses up, it will become deficient and seattered, and its movement is also slow."

Yellow Emperor asked:"Why is there the artery in the Foot Yangming Channel of Stomach?" Qibo said: "When the stomach energy ascends and pours into the lung, the main flow of the energy rushes up to the head, then, it runs along the throat to reach the seven orifices and runs along the inner collaterals of the eyeball to contact with the brain inside, then, come out from the temple, descends to join the Kezhuren point, runs along the Jiache point and joins its own channel of Foot Yangming and ascends to Renying. This is the reason the Renying pulse is pulsating unceasingly when the stomach energy branches out and then returns to the Foot Yangming Channel. Thus, the pulsations of the Cunkou of the Taiyin artery and Renying of the Yangming artery are identical. When the Yang pulse is small in the Yang disease, it is called adverseness; when the Yin pulse is gigantic in the Yin disease, it is also called adverseness. Under the normal condition, the extent of pulsations of the Cunkou and Renying pulses are keeping balance, if one of them is overabundant and the other is deficient, it will cause disease."

Yellow Emperor asked: "Why is there the artery pulsation in the Foot Shaoyin Channel of Kidney?" Qibo said: "The Chong Channel is the sea of the twelve channels. It starts from the Huiyin point together with the colaterals of the Foot Shaoyin Channel, it comes out from the Qi-chong point, runs along the inner side of the thigh, slanting into the poplitea of the knee, then, runs along the inner side of the tibia, joins its own Foot Shaoyin Channel of Kidney, enters into the rear of the inner ankle of the foot and comes out from the location near the outer ankle, enters into the toe and pours into the collateral of the Shaoyin Channel in the leg to warm and moisten the leg. This is the reason the pulsation is unceasing in the Foot Shaoyin Channel.

Yellow Emperor said: "The Ying-energy and the Wei-energy pass through the whole body, they operate above and below like a ring without an end. When one encounters cold suddenly , his extremities will be strengthless, the Yin and Yang operations of his channels and the circulations of his energy and blood will become abnormal, under such situation, from which location will the energy turn back to keep the coming and going without stop-ping?" Qibo said: "The four extremities of the human body are the places for the Yin and Yang energies to converge, and they are the large collaterals of the channel energy: the head, chest, abdomen and the tibia and fibula are the passages of the channel energy, so, when the collaterals are blocked due to being invaded, the channels can still remain unimpeded. The channel energy will become harmony again after the evil-energies in the four extremities have been relieved and the transmission will go on like a ring without an end."
