(1) beneath one's dignity（常作反语）有失身份、尊严、体面等
1. Some husbands still think it beneath their dignity to do the shopping.
有些做丈夫的至今仍然认为让他们去买东西是件丢面子的事。
2. Such conduct is beneath the dignity of a gentleman.
这种行为不合绅士的身份。
(2) stand on one's dignity（因自爱）保持尊严；（因自命不凡）摆架子
1. She doesn't stand on her dignity and treat the rest of us as servants.
她没有端着架子把我们当做仆人对待。
2. If you stand on your dignity, how dare I take liberties?
如果你保持尊严的话，我怎敢随随便便呢?
(3) dilate on sth. 详述某事；铺叙某事
In this chapter she dilates on the benefits of vegetarianism.

They drove away from the city center, the roar of the traffic still dinning in their ears.

(5) fling/throw dirt at sb. 说某人坏话；给某人脸上抹黑
Don't fling dirt at him just because you don't like him, he is really a very admirable fellow.

(6) (be) a dirty word 不喜欢的或不正经的事物或想法
1. My children think that work is a dirty word!
我的孩子都觉得工作顶讨厌!
2. In certain British educational circles 'streaming' has become a dirty word.

(7) (do sb.'s) dirty work （做）他人不想做或难以应付的工作
I had to tell them they'd lost their jobs: I always have to do the boss's dirty work (for him).

(10) dish it out 大骂或猛揍某人
1. Don't get into a fight with him: he can really dish it out.
别跟他动手，他揍起人来可凶了。
2. Taylor likes to dish it out, but he hates to take it.
