英文説的“far from”，意爲“not at all”，加重時说“so far from”。这成语中的“far”，原是表示距离的，转而成爲比喻的用法，具有「遠未」，「絕非」之意。有時在“from”後接上一个形容詞，也可视为省去了動名詞“being”的说法，例如He is far from happy.即“from being happy”之略。此外“from”後接名詞或代名詞，也是常有的事，如 It is far from the truth.(遠非眞實。)a house far from the town.(遠离城市的屋子。）還有成语的“far from it”(决無其事；一點也不)，也就是英文“not in the least”的意思。例如：“Mr. Dickson, you say, is not, strictly speaking, handsome!" "Handsome! Oh no; far from it. -certainly plain”.(Jane Austen) (「你說狄克遜先生，严格地講並不漂亮！」「漂亮！啊，不，一點也不——他确是長得很平凡的呀。）最後说的是「其貌不揚」的婉說法。
