(1) be/come of age 成年;达到法定年龄

1. In China, both males and females are of age at eighteen.

在中国,男女都是18岁成年(达到法定年龄)。

2. He will come of driving age next year.

他明年就达到法定驾车的年龄。


(2) for ages/for an age 很长时间;很久

1. It seems that we haven't seen each other for ages.

我们好像很长时间没见面了。

2. Mao Zedong's name and his glorious deeds wil endure for ages.

毛泽东的名字和他的光辉业绩将永世长存。


(3) agree to differ 承认有分歧,同意保留不同意见

You think keeping late hours can do you good, but I think keeping early hours can benefit you. Now that we have different ideas, let's agree to differ on this.

你认为晚起晚睡对你有好处,,但我认为早起早睡对你有好处。既然我们想法不同,我们就保留不同意见吧。


(4) agree with (sb.) (对某人的健康或胃口)合适

1. The humid climate didn't agree with him.

那潮湿的气候对他的健康不合适。

2.I like this food, but it doesn't agree with me.

我喜欢这种食物,但我吃了以后不舒服。


(5) airs and graces 矫操造作;装腔作势;装横作样;摆架子

1. He chuckled at her airs and graces. 

他看她装模作样,便嘻嘻地笑起来。

2. I can't stand actors who put on airs and graces.

我受不了娇揉过作的演员。


(6) give oneself airs/put on airs 摆架子;装腔作势;自以为了不起

1. He was in great demand. Consequently, he gave himself airs.

到处都需要他,因此,他自以为了不起了。

2. Although he is an officer of high rank, he never puts on official airs.

尽餐他是一个高级军官,但他从来不摆官架子。


(7) on the air/off the air (无线电或电视)广播/停播

1. This channel comes on the air every morning at 7 a.m.

本频道每天早晨7点钟开始播放。

2. This is VOA. Now we are on the air to South-East Asia.

这是美国之音,现在我们对东南亚广播。

3. We'll be off the air for the summer and returning for a new series in the autumn.

我们将于夏天停播而于秋季开始播送一套新节目。


(8) alive and kicking 精神饱满;生气勃勃;活蹦乱跳

1. I'm glad to see that Bill is alive and kicking.

看到比尔精神饱满,我很高兴。

2. The salmon was alive and kicking when it was dragged out of the river.

这条鲑鱼从河里拖上来时还活蹦乱跳呢。


(9) all in all 1. 从各方面考虑;从各方面来说 2. 心目中的一切;头等重要的事

1. All in all it had been a great success.

从各方面来说,那都是极大的成功。

2. I was all in all then to him, and, in fact, we were all in all to each other.

当时他心里只有我。事宾上,我们俩是相依为命。

3.It is all in all for us to know the truth of the accident.

了解事故的真相对我们来说是至关重要的。


(10) all but (almost) 几乎;差不多

1. The party was all but over when we arrived.

我们到达时,聚会已近尾声。

2. She all but cried when she heard the news.

她听到这消息时,差一点哭了出来。
