(1) catch one's breath（因恐惧，震惊等）一时停止呼吸；屏息
He caught his breath in surprise.
他惊奇地屏住了呼吸。
(2) catch one's death 患重感冒
Don't go out without a coat: you'll catch your death.
别不穿外套出去，会得感冒的。
(3) catch it 挨骂；受罚
If your father finds you here, you'll really catch it.
要是你父亲发现你在这儿，你非挨骂不可。
(4) catch sb. napping 发现某人精神不集中
Don't let the boss catch you napping.
别让老板发现你走神儿。
(5) catch sb. red-handed 当场发现某人正做坏事；当场捉住某人
She flushed looking as guilty as though she had been caught red-handed in some dreadful crime.
他脸一红，好像犯了什么罪行，给人家当场捉住了似的。
(6) catch on 受欢迎；变得流行
Mini-skirts first caught on in 1960's.
超短裙是在60年代开始流行的。
(7) catch sb. out 显出某人无知或犯错误
Ask me anything you like--you won't catch me out.
你尽管问吧一一绝问不倒我。
(8) catch up with (sb.) 赶上，追上（某人）
1. Go on in front. I'll catch up with you/catch you up.
你先走，我很快就赶上你。
2. After missing a term through illness he had to work hard to catch up with the others.
他因病休学一学期，需努力赶上其他同学。
(9) cater for/ to 满足（需要）；迎合（情趣，爱好）
1. TV must cater for many different tastes.
电视节目必须迎合各种人的不同爱好。
2. Some newspapers cater to people's love of scandal.
有些报纸投人们爱看丑闻消息之所好。
(10) throw/fling cautions to the winds 不顾一切；鲁莽行事
He is a rash young man, and he often throws cautions to the winds.
他是一个鲁莽的年轻人，做事经常不顾一切。
