QUALITY STANDARDS OF SOFTWARE LOCALIZATION

No system has been developed, however, that can be applied to all types of multilingual projects, covering all activities, aspects, and project components. In the localization industry, the two most commonly used translation quality assessment tools are the LISA QA Model and the DIN 2345 translation quality standard, Translation Contracts.



LISA QA Model

The Localisation Industry Standards Association QA Model was prepared by a group of companies active in the localization industry, including publishers and localization vendors. It aims to help organizations manage the quality assurance process for all activities and components in a localization project.


The LISA QA Model consists of reference manuals and templates. The reference manuals explain the localization process and QA checkpoints for documentation, online help, software, computer-based training, and packaging components. Two sets of criteria are given for each of the components, one for language and one for functionality. It also contains quality check lists and templates which can be used to track errors.

DIN 2345 Translation Quality Standard


The DIN 2345 translation quality standard was prepared by a technical committee with representatives from professional organizations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It focuses on translation activities only, and contains sections on work procedures, source and target text correctness, contracts, translation content, and checking and revision. It regulates the conditions under which translation contracts are performed and defines many terms and activities associated with those contracts.


According to the foreword, "Freelance translators, in-house translation departments and translation agencies or companies may declare on their own responsibility that their work complies with this standard. This declaration of conformity may well serve to increase the client's confidence in the quality of the services provided, as compliance with the standard is verifiable for every translation."
