“谁需时若干做某事（包括产生某种状态）”这个相对完整的意思，英语主要有三种译法。这三种译法的分界线可以“需”字的英译为准。通常，这里“需时”的“需”相当于英语“to take”。所以我们就“take”这个词为区分三种译法的标准。
第一种译法，是由动词不定式（或其短语）充任“take ”的主语，如：
1. To brew, ferment and mature stella takes 4 times as long as ordinary beers.
—Observer Magazine, 4 September 1977, p.5
这种充任“take”主语的不定式（或其短语）也可退居第二线而先由其前锋“It”出来打头阵，如：
2. It took (them) seven days of hard marching to reach it， another five to cross its 40 miles of churned-up ice ... .

3. It took 600 years (for those trees) to grow — and would take another 600 to replace them.
—National Geographic, September 1977，p.295
上例中的圆括弧是原文所无，乃笔者所加。为的是要说明：（1）例2中的“them”表示实际上花费时间者，（2）例3中的“for (those trees)”短语则表示不定式“to grow”的主体。如上下文有必要，“take”可跟间接宾语（如例2中 的“them”）。
第二种译法不以动词不定式为“take”的主语，而以实际花费或经受时间者为“take”的主语，请看：
4. …the female cuckoo takes eleven seconds to remove, or even eat an egg and replace it with one of her own.

5. The two most common... crops, oil palm and rubber, take six or seven years to mature.
