It用作人称代词时，通常用以代替上文提到过的无生命的事物，或虽有生命但无阳阴性区别的生物。此时的it有三种翻译处理方法：(A). 照译为“它；其”；（B). 重复译为它所代替的名词；（C). 减去不译。具体采用哪种译法，应视情况而定。试看以下各例。
1. The sun has a family. It is the biggest member in the family.
太阳有一个家族，而它是这个家族中最大的成员。(照译为“它”）
2. The ability for a material to conduct electricity depends on the number of free electrons in it.
物质导电的能力取决于它所含自由电子的数量。（照译为“它”）
3. If the gun complements the missiles in the antiair defense, it does so even more in the anti-ship engagement.
如果说火炮在对空防御中起辅助导弹的作用，那么在对舰作战中则更是如此。（减去不译）
4. All animals breathe air, and if deprived of it，they will die.
一切动物都呼吸空气。因此，如果没有空气，动物就会死亡。（重译为“空气”）
5. At seven Edison entered school but left it after three months, for the teacher considered him stupid.
爱迪生七岁开始上学，但三个月后便退学了，因为老师认为他太笨。（重译为“学”）
要说明的一点是，it用作人称代词时，一般都出现在它代替的名词之后（以上各例均如此），但有时（尤其是在主从复合句中）也可能先于所代替的词出现，即代替下文将要提到的事物。此时，往往需要把it译为所代名词的词义，而把下文的名词按以上三种译法处理。再如下面两例。
6. When it is not in use，cover the device with a piece of cloth in order to keep the dust out.
本机不用时，请用布盖好，以免落入灰尘。（it译为“本机”，而把device减译）
7. No matter how abstract it is, mathematics will surely play an ever more important part in science and tehnology.
不管数学多么抽象，它肯定将在科学技术上起日益重要的作用。 (it译为“数学”，而mathematics译为“它”）
以it三种译法，不管采用哪一种，都必须以译文淸楚、准确、不致张冠李戴为原则。这就要求首先准确地判断出it所代替的是哪-个词，尔后才动笔。
