(三）“increase+by+ a factor of+N”
可译“增加了 N—1倍”或“增加到N倍”。例如：
7. Since 1970 the total number of schools in this countiy has increased by a factor of 5.
自1970年以来，该国的学校总数增加了四倍。
8. The new technique will raise the output value by a factor of 4.
这项新技术可把产值提高到原来的四倍。
(四）be + N times + over (up on)
可译为“增加了 N — 1倍”或“增加到N倍”。例如
9. Agricultuial output for 1986 is estimated to be three times up on 1964.
据估计，1986年的农业产值增至1964年的三倍。
10. This year the value of our industrial output is five times over that of 1952.
今年，我国的工业产值比1952年增加了四倍。
(五）as many (large，much，heavy 等）again as
可译为“比……一倍”或“两倍于”或“是……的两倍”。例如：
11. The laboratory under construction will be as large again as this one.
正在兴建的实验室将比这个实验室大一倍。
12. The driving gear turns an fast again as the driven gear.
主动齿轮的转速为从动齿轮的两倍。
(六）用double和twice表示倍数。应译为“增加一倍”或 “是……的两倍”。例如：
13. Every 10 months the number of people with AIDS doubles in US.
在美国，患艾滋病的人数每十个月就增加一倍。
14. The two countries are scheduled to sign a longterm agreement Tuesday, which is expected to double the trade between them.
两国计划于星期二签订一项长期协定，顸计该协定将使两国的贸易额增加一倍。
(七）用treble或triple表示倍数。应译为“增加两倍”或 “增加到三倍”例如：
15. Between 1950 and 1973 the number of telephones in the USA more than tripled, with an addition of 90 million telephones.
1950年至1973年间，美国的电话机增加了九千万只， 总数比原来增加两倍以上。
16. The number of farms in the Unites States tripled between 1860 and 1910.
1910年，美国的农场数目是1860年的三倍。
英语中表示倍数增加的句型主要有以上七类。如遇到类似表达方式，可参照以上讨论的译法处理。
这里需要指出一点，在以上（一）、（二）、（三）、（四）等几种句型中，如果倍数是一个很大的近似值，那么对数值精确度的要求相对就低一些。因此译时不必再减去一，因为此时的一倍之差并不影响结果。
