英语句子的定语转换为汉语谓语的情况相当多见，有时也可转换为汉语的状语。
(一)转换为谓语
英语句子中表示性状的定语，尤其是形容词或分词定语，往往具有较强的谓语性，翻译时常难以保留原来的“定语+名词”形式。此时，如果把该定语转换为汉语的谓语，使之和所修饰的名词—起构成汉语的主谓词组，则可使译文流畅晓白，逻輯严密。在实际翻译时，这种处理方法十分可取。试看以下各例：
1. The machine is featured by novel shape, easy operation, high calorific efficiency and low fuel consumption.
本机的特点是造型新颖、操作简便、热效率高，油粍低。
2. It Is necessary to solve one of the most serious problems posed by the missile age；that is ,the limited missile reserve in ships which, although being high-value, are of small dimension.
有必要解决导弹时代所产生的最严重的问题之一，即某些战舰虽造价高昂，但吨位较小，导弹储量有限。
3. The effects of some chemical substances are raised blood pressure, inhibited digestion and increased heartbeat.
某些化学物质会引起血压升高、消化不良和心动过速。
4. The force of gravity is not constant everywhere for elliptical form and rugged surface of the earth.
由于地球形状椭圆，表面又凹凸不平，所以重力不是到处都一样的。
5. One of the commonest causes of constipation is too little fluid intake.
便秘最常见的原因之一，是液体摄入量过少。
(二）转换为状语
如果英语句中的某一名词需转译为汉语的动词，那么修饰该名词的形容词或分词定语就应转换成汉语的状语。例如：
6. The development of guided round offers the potential for substantial reduction in ammunition expenditure.
制导炮弹的研制成功能够大大减少弹药的消耗。
7. The invention of photography permitted the immediate recording of evcents as they took place.
摄影术的发明使得可以随时记录所发生的事件。
8. They have made use of these data in testing.
他们在试验中已充分利用了这些数据。
9. The Canadian decision is an interesting indication of a possible new trend.
加拿大的这一决策引人注目地表明了一种可能的新动向。
