3.3 英文长句包含多方面内容或多步逻辑推理，分译使译文文理清晰、重点突出
(13) I bad better explain here that there was a misunderstanding which was my fault, for I discovered some time afterwards that I had copied the phrase in the book which was just below the one which meant “I don't understand Turkish," and the one I had copied and learned and had been saying to everyone for days meant "Please phone at once to Mr Yorum," though this seems to be a silly phrase to print in a book for the use of people who do not know Mr Yotum at all and never would want to telephone to him. But one day this Mr Yorum turned up at the Yessilyurt to stay.

（这句话的原文是ー个繁杂的英文长句，翻译时根据内容需要，把原句拆译成好几个汉语分句，意思一层ー层,清清楚楚。)
英语多长句，这是众所周知的事实；但英语有长句，也是比比皆是的语言现象。由于现代汉语的句子趋向于简洁、洗练，英语的短句一般都译成汉语中对应的短句，所以翻译论著中一般都只谈分译，不谈合句。即使偶见一节半章，那也是略举数例因应文章需要。但这个问题是有文章可做的，也是值得我们探讨的。
4 合泽法
4.1省略某些词，使一句话变成另一句话的一个成份
(14) The paper provides us with no insight and lacks some depth. It's but a fine writing.
这篇论文没有向我们提供任何见解，缺乏深度，只不过是ー篇矫揉造作的文章而巳。
(本句在翻译时省略了英文后一句话的主语，使之成为译文中的一个并列谓语。)
4.2 运用汉语的连接词，把英文的几个串句连接成汉语的一个复句
(15) John had been picked up by another ship. The ship's captain had sent out a message.
约翰被另外一艘船救起，因为他遇难的那艘船的船长发出了救援信号。
4.3 省略英文复句中的连接同，把从句融合成主句的一部分
(16）It is quite likely that two individual whales meeting through chance will not be compatible. They can hardly be expected to be aware of their own rarity or to realize any need for adjusting their natural inclinations.
偶然碰到一起的两只鲸很可能不能共存。几乎不能指望它们会意识到自己的稀少或认识到有必要调整自己的自然倾向。
(主句It is quite unlikely被译成了主语从句中的状语成份。)
4. 4 省略原文的某些从句，将其意思隐含在译文的字里行间
(17) In other words mineral substances which are found on the earth must be extracted by digging , boring holes , artificial explosions , or similar operations which make them available to us.
换言之，地球上探明的矿物必须经过挖掘、钻孔、人工爆破或类似作业才能开采出来。
(定语从句which make them available省略未译，意思包含在“开采出来”之中。）
