但有些复合名词词组虽然表层结构与NP + PP相同，但深层结构和语义关系却不一样。翻译时不能任意按以上结构译出。如：
Our eye is sensitive only to a narrow range of wavelengths between 0.4 and 0.7 microns.
我们的眼睛只能感受到0.4〜0.7微米狭窄范围之内的波长。
这里的复合名词词组不能译成“波长在0.4〜0.7微米之间的狭窄范围”， 因为“……眼睛……感受……范围”在语义上不如“眼睛……感受……范围内的物体”搭配合理。从表层结构上看，这里的a narrow range of相当于ー个限定词，它所限定的词是of后面的名词。这种限定词的功能与汉语的量词相当。英语中这样的词很多，翻译时要注意。例如：
a beam of ordinary light —束普通光
a number of reasons 一些理由
a large amount of heat energy 大量热能
a high degree of similarity 高度（的）相似性
但是，这里冠词的改变，也会引起意思变化。如：
the number of reasons 理由的条数
the amount of heat 热能（的）量
the degree of similarity 相似的程度
当中心词是抽象名词或由动词转变来的名词时，复合名词词组的处理还应注意要适当增词。例如：
Although aluminum has a great affinity for oxygen, its corrosion-resistance is relatively high.铝对氧虽然有很大的亲合力，但其抗腐浊性能较强。
复合名词词组结构繁简不一，翻译技巧也会各不相同。如：
A general description is given of a waler supply system now under construction in the area east of Toulon comprising pipes between 450mm and 1 250mm in diameter totalling a length of approximately 30kms operating ar pressure of 20-30 bans over two-thirds of their run.
在遇到这种复杂的结构时，首先应该弄清各成分间的句法关系，然后根据汉语习惯，按语义恰当地译出。如：
本文对土伦东部正在建设的供水系统作了一般的介绍。该系统是由直径 450--1250mm的水管组成，总长近30公里，其流程2/3以上的工作压カ为 20--30 巴。
