杨译：
Enemies and lovers are destined to meet.
霍译：
‘Tis Fate brings foes and lo’ es together.
两位译者对俗语直译的结果，除了表现出这种相似性之外，也不乏下面这样完全相同的情况：
II.两种译文表达方式完全一致。
1)原文：眼不见心不烦（第二十九回）
杨/霍译：
What the eye doesn’t see the heart doesn’t grieve (for) •
2)原文：金子终得金子换（第四十六回）
杨/霍译：
True gold will find its price.
3)原文：与人方便，自己方便。（第六回）
杨/霍译：
He who helps others helps himself.
III.对于同一句俗语，两个译本呈现出直译与意译的不同。
1)凤姐儿听了，眼圈儿红了半天，半日方说道真是‘天有不测风云，人有旦夕祸福，。这个年纪，倘或就因这个病上怎么样了，人还活着有甚么趣儿！ ”（第十一回）
杨译：
Xifeng's eyes became moist. After a pause she exclaimed，“Truly，‘Storms gather without warning in nature，and bad luck befalls men overnight. ’ But life is hardly worth living if such an illness can carry off one so young!"
霍译：
Xi-feng's eyes became moist and for a moment she was too overcome to speak.
‘I know “the weather and human life are both unpredictable”，'she said at last，‘but she，s only a child still. If anything should happen to her as a result of this illness，I think all the fun would go out of life! ’
该例的杨译采取直译，从形式到内容与原文保持了一致；霍译的意译法行文简洁，也能达意。下面一例情况相反：杨译是意译法，霍译是直译法。
