有些生活用语，正好汉语与英语都有，而且简直就象逐字译出来的。
比如说，鲁迅谈到翻译难，曾有“词典不离手，冷汗不离身”之说（见《“题未定”草》可见，不出“一身冷汗”，恐怕是很难有好译品的吧。这“—身冷汗”英语就是“(in) a cold sweat”,
请看下例：
He was in a cold sweat, terrified and sure there was someone else in the room with him.

与此类似，“与时间赛跑”的英语表达，也同逐字翻译相仿——“(in) a race with time ”。请
看下例：
Cinque was in a race with time, believing that every minute must be a step forward in the fight to save the children.

有些学习者由于怕犯“中国腔英语”的毛病，对这种似是逐字翻译的表达法，总有点不大放心。因此，有必要搬出原著如上。
但是，千万不能把“逐字翻译”当作一般规律，否则就要碰大钉子。比如说，汉语“汗衫”的 “逐字翻译” “sweat shirt”，就根本不是什么汗衫，而是运动员穿的长袖线衫与汉语“汗衫”相当的既然不是逐字翻译的“sweat (汗）shirt（衫）”这个词，那又是什么呢？——是“T shirt”。
至于英语为什么把汗衫说成“T shirt”呢？ 那是以“T”象汗衫之形。
