这句话我们前面分析过，这里选了另外一个学生的英语泽文。该译文反映出这位考生对于近义词desert和abandon之间的细小差别还不清楚。在一般英汉词典中，尽管这两个英语词的汉语解释都是“遗弃”，但二者的程度差別很大，abandon的严重程度远远大于deser，前者指“永久性地丢弃或者永远丟弃”，而后者指“暂时丢弃”，以后还可能收回或者复用，使用时务必注意。因此，按照程度的強弱，应该把 desert用在abandon之前，而不是之后。
例3 [原文] 因此，在他的实验室所招的学生中，除一名来自德国外，其余5位均是亚裔学生。
[学生译文]Hence, of all the students recruited into his laboratory, except for one German, the other five were all from Asia.
[参考译文 1] Therefore, of all the six students he hired for his laboratory, five were of Asian origin, and one was from Germany.
[参考译文 2] So，of all the six assistants he selected for his laboratory work, five were of Asian origin, and one was from Germany.
【1997年八级考试】
尽管这句话还有其他方面的翻译问题，我们这里只讨论“招(收、聘、募)”这个词的翻译。在汉语中，我们通常“招收”助手、学生、雇工等，“招聘”干部、高级人才等，“招募”新兵等。在英语中，招募新兵、警察，组织机构招收人员时オ用recruit，大学教授招收研究助手时，很少用recruit。非正式场合可用hire，正式点可用select 等。至于招生，一般用admit，相应的名词是admission。“招生办公室”的英语是The Admission Office, “招生人员”则是admission officer。当然，如果实在拿不定主意，干脆隐含掉它，不用把它翻译出来。请看参考译文3，虽然直接找不着“招”字的痕迹， 但其意思却完全表达出来了。显然，这样的翻译一般是不会失分的，也不应该失分。
[参考译文 3] So，of all the six students who worked as assistants for him in the laboratary, five were of Asian origin, and one is from Germany.
