证明文件可以无处不有，学生证、工作证、户口本、各种职称证件，身份证等等，其作用当然是证明持证人身份的证件。到了异国他乡，护照就是身份证了。广义地讲，这些既是证明文件，也是所说的法律凭证。
证明书是由一个受权部门或资信可靠的机构出具的证明另一个机构有关方面情况的证明信件。
