汉语中使用比喻的情况也很普遍，特别是非常风趣的歇后语，诸如“芝麻开花传节高”（sesame stalks putting forth flowery notch by notch, higher and higher, rising steadily)、“叫花子拨算盘穷操心” (A beggar plays the abacus ——it is nothing necessary for him to calculate his income)、“黄鼠狼给鸡拜年没安好心”（The weasel goes to pay his respects to the hen — not with the best of intentiom)之类，译成英文是很困难的，例如：
