The symptoms of stomach cancer may be confused with those of a peptic ulcer. If symptoms don't clear up after a person takes ulcer drugs or if the symptoms include weight loss, doctors suspect stomach cancer.
X-ray studies that use barium to outline changes in the surface of the stomach often are performed, but they rarely reveal small, early stomach cancers. Endoscopy ( an examination using a flexible viewing tube) is the best diagnostic procedure because it allows a doctor to view the stomach directly; to check for Helicobacter pylori , the bacterium that may play a role in stomach cancer; and to obtain tíssue samples for examination under a microscope.
