Shui Re Xue Lun
(On the Shu-points for Treating the Fluid-retention Syndrome and Fever)
Yellow Emperor asked: "Why is it that the Shaoyin determines the condition of the kidney, and the kidney determines the condition of the water?" Qibo answered: "Kidney is the location to store the extreme Yin, and Yin belongs to the water, so, the kidney is the viscus which determines the condition of water. Kidney belongs to Shaoyin, and Shaoyin is most prosperous in winter, and winter is the season which corresponds with water, therefore, the root of edema is in the kidney, and its symptom is manifested in the lung. If the viscus of lung or kidney is not sound, the accumulation of fluid will occur."
Yellow Emperor asked: "How can the kidney acumulate the fluid and cause disease?" Qibo answered: "The kidney is like the sluice gate of the stomach, when the sluice gate does not work, the fluid will be accumulated and the evil-energy will run wild, when the fluid overflows about the skin, peritoneal fluid will occur. The come about of the peritoneal fluid is due to the continuous accumulation of the fluid."
Yellow Emperor asked: "Are all the fluid-retention syndromes originated from kidney?" Qibo answered: "Kidney is a Yin viscus, when the earth-energy communicates with kidney, fluid will produce, so the kidney is called the viscus of extreme Yin. If anyone is self-assured for his courage to conduct excessive sex intercourse or take part in excessive labour, he will be sweating, and when the wind-evil invades the body during the sweating, his sweat pores will close all of a sudden, as the perspiration has not completed, the sweat can not return to its viscus inside, neither can it be discharged to the skin outside, the fluid will fill the skin and cause edema."
The disease is caused by the affection of the kidney, and is also caused by the wind-evil, so it is called the edema caused by wind-evil."
Yellow Emperor asked: "The number of the Shu-points for treating the fluid-retention syndrome are fifty seven, by which viscus are they related?" Qibo answered: "The fifty seven Shu-points of the kidney are the locations where the Yin energy accumulates and they are also the locations where the fluid comes in and goes out. There are five rows above the but-tock, and each row has five points, they amount to twenty five points and they are all the Shu-points of kidney, and they are the Shu-points dominated by the Du Channel and the Foot Taiyang Channel. When the fluid-retention is in the lower part, edema of the dorsum and swelling of the abdomen will occur; if the fluid-retention is in the upper part, rapid breathing and failure of lying on the back of the patient will occur. This is the case of disease in both the root and the branch: the rapid breathing associates with the lung and edema associates with the kidney, when the lung is coerced by the up-reversing flow of the water-energy, the patient will not be able to lie on his back. As the spreading of the kidney-energy and the lung-energy are correlated with each other, the retention of fluid will cause both the viscera to suffer disease.
"Above the Futu point beside the Ren Channel are two rows on which each rows are the five points of Zhongzhu (KI,15), Siman (KI.14), Qixue (KI.13), Dahe (KI.12) and Henggu (KI. 11): on each of the two further sides are the five points of Wailing (ST. 26), Daju (ST. 27), Shuidao (ST. 28), Guilai (ST. 29) amd Qichong (ST. 30). They amount to twenty points on the left and right sides, and they are all the passways of the kidney energy and the three Yin Channels of Foot. Above each inner ankle, there is the row for the kidney energy to descend to the Yongquan point which is called the Taichong line. On each line of the left and the right there are the six points of Taichong (LR. 3), Fuliu (KI. 7), Yingu (KI. 10), Zhaohai (KI. 6), Jiaoxin (KT. 8) and Zhubin (KI. 9), and they amount to twelve points on the left and right sides. The above fifty seven points are all the Yin collaterals of the viscera and they are also the locations where the water-energy retains. They should be pricked when treating the fluid-retention syndrome."
