病本/Bing Ben
(In Treating the Root and Branch of the Disease)
先病而后逆者，治其本。先逆而后病者，治其本。先寒而后生病者，治其本。先病而后生寒者，治其本。先热而后生病者，治其本。先泄而后生他病者，治其本，必且调之，乃治其他病。先病而后中满者，治其标。先病后泄者，治其本。先中满而后烦心者，治其本。有客气，有同气。大小便不利，治其标;大小便利，治其本。
When one contracts a disease first, then the syndrome of adverseness of the energy and blood occurs, it should mainly treat the root which is the disease itself; when one contracts the syndrome of adverseness of the energy and blood first, then, a certain disease occurs, it should mainly treat the root to adjust the energy and blood; when one contracts the syndrome of cold property first, and then, the other disease occurs, it should mainly treat the root which is the syndrome of cold property; when one contracts a disease first, and then, the syndrome of cold property occurs, it should mainly treat the root which is the disease; when one contracts the syndrome of hot property first, then another disease occurs, it should mainly treat the root which is the syndrome of hot property; when one contracts diarrhea first, and then, the other disease occurs, it should mainly treat the root which is diarrhea, and treat the other disease after the diarrhea has been cured; when one contracts other disease first, then, the abdominal flatulence occurs, it should adjust the abdominal flatulence which is the branch first: when one contracts other disease first, and then the diarrhea occurs, it should mainly treat the the root which is the disease; when one contracts abdominal flatulence first and then the feeling of oppression of the chest occurs, it should mainly treat the root which is the abdominal flatulence. In the diseases of man, some are caused by the guest energy which is the transmission of evil energies of different roots, and some are caused by the identical energy which is the transmission of evil energies of the same root. When the patient contracts a disease. if there is retention of feces and urine and the case is urgent, it should treat the branch which is the retention of feces and urine first; if there is no retention of feces and urine, it should treat the disease.
病发而有余，本而标之，先治其本，后治其标;病发而不足，标而本之，先治其标，后治其本。谨详察间甚，以意调之，间者并行，甚为[为:《素问.标本病传论》《甲乙》卷六第二并作“者”]独行。先小大便不利而后生他病者，治其本也。
When the disease is sthenic which is having a surplus during its attack, then the surplus evil is the root and the syndrome is the branch, it should treat the evil energy first, then, treat the disease; when the disease is asthenic and the healthy energy appears to be deficient, then, the deficient energy is the branch and the syndrome is the root, it should support the healthy energy first and then treat the disease. Thus, when treating, one must examine carefully the severe and slight extent of the syndrome and adjust accordingly. To the slight disease, the root and branch can be treated simultaneously; to the severe disease, it should treat the root or the branch first merely.
