著至教论篇/Zhu Zhi Jiao Lun
(The Supreme Principle Which Relates to Heaven, Earth and Man)
黄帝坐明堂，召雷公而问之日:子知医之道乎?雷公对日:诵而颇[《太平御览》卷七百二十一《方术部》引“颇”作“未”]能解，解而未能别，别而未能明，明而未能彰，足以治群僚，不足至[吴本“至”作“治”]侯王，愿得受树天之度，四时阴阳合之，别星辰与日月光，以彰经术，后世益明，上通神农，著至教，疑于二皇。帝日:善!无失之，此皆阴阳表里上下雌雄相输应也，而道上知天文，下知地理、中知人事，可以长久，以教众庶，亦不疑殆，医道论篇，可传后世，可以为宝。
When Yellow Emperor sat in the Bright Hall, he summoned Lei Gong and asked:"Do you understand the principle of medicine?" Lei Gong said: "I have read the medical books, but I can hardly explain it; even though I can explain it, I can hardly analyse it clearly; even though I can analyse it, I do not understand the reasons of it; even though I can understand the reasons of it, I can hardly practise it in clinic. Therefore, with my knowledge of medicine, I can only treat the diseases of my colleagues, and I am not capable to treat the diseases of the kings and the nobles. I hope you can tell me the way of surveying the heavens degree, enable me to comprehend fully the mysteries of the four seasons, Yin and Yang, stars, sun and moon, and integrating them with the medical theory and practice which may be promoted and become ever so obvious in the later generations. In this way, the most brilliant skill of medicine which is inherited from the remote medical master Shen Nong, and can reach the medical level of the two kings (Baoxi and Nuiwo).”
Yellow Emperor aid: “Good." These principles must not be lost. They are the inter-relations and mutual responses between the Yin and Yang, superficies and interior, ups and downs, male and female. The medical theory and skill can only last long when the astronomy above, the geography below and the human affairs in the middle are known, and it is only under this condition can the medical instructions be taught to people without perplexion. It will be really valuable to write down the theories of medicine in books and pass them to the later generations.”
雷公日:请受道，讽诵用解。帝日:子不闻《阴阳传》乎!日:不知。日:夫三阳天为业，上下无常，合而病至，偏害阴阳。雷公日:三阳莫当，请闻其解。帝日:三阳独至者，是三阳并至，并至如风雨，上为巅疾，下为漏病，外无期，内无正，不中经纪，诊无上下，以书别。雷公日:臣治疏愈，说意而已。帝日:三阳者，至阳也，积并则为惊，病起疾风，至如磷砺，九窃皆塞，阳气滂溢，干嗌喉塞，并于阴，则上下无常，薄为肠僻，此谓三阳直心，坐不得起，卧者便身全[林校引《甲乙经》“便身全”作“身重”]。三阳之病，且以知天下，何以别阴阳，应四时，合之五行。
Lei Gong said:"Please impart the medical theory to me, and I will read it aloud until I can comprehend, it. "Yellow Emperor asked: "Have you ever heard of the book 《Yin Yang Zhuan》?" Lei Gong said:"No. " Yellow Emperor said: "When the three Yang energies do not follow the common law and move up and down, they will combine to cause the partial over-abundance of Yin or Yang to form disease."
Lei Gong asked: "When the energies of the three Yangs arrive simultaneously, they can hardly be stopped, and why is it?" Yellow Emperor said: "In the simultaneous arrival of the three Yang energies, it is swift like the storm, when it invades the upper part of the body, it will cause disorder of the head, when it invades the lower part of the body, it will cause the incontinence of feces and urine. The disease contracted has no evident symptom outside, and has no definite criterion for distinguishing inside. As the infection does not follow the common law, it can hardly be determined whether the disease is pertaining to the upper part or to the lower part."
Lei Gong said: "When I treat this kind of disease, only a few of them can be cured, please tell me the reason and remove my perplexion." Yellow Emperor said:"When the energies of the three Yangs arrive simultaneously, it is the condition of the utmost abundance of Yang. and the accumulation of Yang causes frightening. The onset of the disease is swift like wind, and it is vigorous like the thunderbolt which can even shut the nine orifices. As the Yang energy is overflowing outside, it causes dry larynx and the obstruction of the throat. If the energies of the three Yangs combine with Yin, the Yin energy will be stirred and the upper and the lower part of the body will become disorderly, if the evil retains in the lower warmer, the intestinal bi-syndrome (syndrome due to the dysfunction of the large or small intestine) will occur. As the evil energy of the three Yangs accumulates to effect the channels. the patient will not be able to stand up after sitting, and the body will feel heavy when lying down. Although the diseases stated above are pertaining to the three Yangs, yet, through them. one can understand further the relation between heaven and man, the ways of distinguishing Yin and Yang to suit the four seasons and to coordinate with the five elements."
雷公日:阳言不别，阴言不理，请起受解，以为至道。帝日:子若受传，不知合至道以惑师教，语子至道之要，病伤五藏，筋骨以消，子言不明不别，是世主学尽矣。肾且绝，惋惋曰暮，从容不出，人事不殷。
Lei Gong said: "I can not distinguish it even when you speak it plainly, not to say comprehending it when you speak it indistinctly. Let me stand up to hear your explanation, so that I may understand the most profound principle."
Yellow Emperor said: "Although you have received the impartation from your teacher, but you do not know how to integrate it with the supreme principle, so, there are still something perplexing with your teacher's teaching. Now, let me tell you the essentials about the supreme principle. If the five viscera of man are injured by the evil energy, the muscle and bone will be wasting away day after day. If the principles of medicine are not distinguished nor comprehended as you have said, the supreme principle would have had lost long ago. For instance, if the kidney pulse is severing, the patient will feel oppressive in heart, and become even worse in the evening, the patient will feel slothful in the body, unwilling to go out and reluctant to contact people."
