(On Treating Asthenia and Sthenia with Acupuncture)
黄帝问日:愿闻虚实之要，岐伯对日:气实形实，气虚形虚，此其常也，反此者病;谷盛气盛，谷虚气虚，此其常也，反此者病;脉实血实，脉虚血虚，此其常也，反此者病。
Yellow Emperor said: "I hope you can tell me the essentials about asthenia and sthenia." Qibo said:"When the energy is substantial and the body is also substantial or when the energy is deficient and the body is also deficient, it is the normal condition; when the condition is on the contrary, it is the diseased condition. When one takes plenty of food and he has
a overabundant energy, or when he can take only a little food and his energy is insufficient, it is the normal condition; when the condition is on the contrary, it is the diseased condition. When the pulse is substantial and the blood is also substantial, or when the pulse is deficient and the blood is also deficient, it is the normal condition; when the condition is on the contrary, it is the diseased condition."
帝日:如何而反?岐伯日[林校云:“据《甲乙》“曰”下当补“气盛身寒”四字]:气虛身热，此谓反也，谷入多而气少，此谓反也;谷不入[“不入”误，应作“入少”]而气多，此谓反也;脉盛血少，此谓反也;脉少[“少”误，应作“小”]血多，此谓反也。
Yellow Emperor asked: “What is the condition when it is abnormal?" Qibo said: When the healthy energy is overabundant but the body is cold, or when the energy is deficient but the body is hot, they are both the abnormal conditions, When one can eat plenty but his energy is insufficient, it is an abnormal condition; when one can eat only a little but has an overabundant energy, it is also the abnormal condition. When the pulse is substantial, but the blood is insufficient, it is an abnormal condition; When the pulse is deficient but the blood is plenty, it is also an abnormal condition.
气盛身寒，得之伤寒。气虚身热，得之伤暑。谷入多而气少者，得之有所脱血，湿居下也，谷入少而气多者，邪在胃及与肺也。脉小血多者，饮中热也。脉大血少者，脉有风气，水浆不入，此之谓[张琦说“此之谓”三字衍]也。
"When the energy is overabundant but the body is cold, it is due to the injury by the cold-evil. When the energy is insufficient but the body is hot, it is due to the injury by the summer-heat.
"When one can eat a lot but has few energy is due to the wetness-evil accumulating below after the loss of blood.
"When one can eat only a little but his energy has a surplus shows the evil-energy retains in the stomach and has reached the lung.
"When the pulse is small but the blood is plenty and the patient has a red complexion, it is caused by the heat in the middle warmer due to excessive drinking of wine. When the pulse is large but the blood is few, it is due to the patient has contracted wind-evil without drinking any water and soup.
夫实者，气入也，虚者，气出也;气实者，热也，气虚者，寒也。入实者，左手开针空也;入虚[《素问识》云:“当是‘出虚’”]者，左手闭针空也。
"The so-called sthenia indicates the evil-energy has entered the body. The so-called asthenia indicates the healthy energy has exhausted inside. When the evil-energy is sthenic, heat will produce; when the healthy energy is asthenic, cold will occur.
"When treating the sthenia-syndrome with acupuncture, it should open the needle hole with the left hand so as to purge; when treating the asthenia-syndrome with acupuncture, it should close the needle hole which is pricked with the left hand so as to invigorate."
