刺要论/Ci Yao Lun
(The Essentials of Acupuncture)
黄帝问曰:愿闻刺要。岐伯对曰:病有浮沈，刺有浅深，各至其理，无过其道，过之则内伤，不及则生外壅[按“生”字衍]，壅则邪从之，浅深不得，反为大贼，内动[《甲乙》“动”作“伤”]五藏，后生大病。故曰:病有在毫毛腠理者，有在皮肤者，有在肌肉者，有在脉者，有在筋者，有在骨者，有在髓者。
Yellow Emperor asked: "What are the essentials of acupuncture?" Qibo answered: "The extents of severeness of diseases are different, and in treating, the depth of pricking should also be different. In treating, the pricking should reach the depth where it ought to be, and must not exceed the proper criterion. If the pricking is too deep, the viscus will be hurt, if the pricking is too shallow, it will unable to reach the focus and will cause stagnation of the energy and blood outside, in this case, the evil-energy may take advantage to invade. Therefore, if the depth of the pricking is improper, it can, on the contrary, cause great damage. If the viscus inside is hurt. the patient will contract serious disease.
"The fact is some diseases are in the fine hair and striae, some are in the skin, some are in the muscle, some are in the channel, some are in the tendon, some are in the bone and some are in the marrow.
是故刺毫毛腠理无伤皮，皮伤则内动肺，肺动则秋病温疟[《甲乙》“温疟”下有“热厥”二字]，拆诉[《甲乙》作“淅淅”《广雅・释诂二》:“淅，洒也”“洒然”寒貌]然寒傈。
"Thus when pricking the fine hair and striae, the skin must not be hurt, if the skin is injured, it will affect the lung inside. When the lung can not bring its functions into full play, the patient will have warm-type malaria and cold extremities due to heat-evil in autumn will occur, and can develope into the syndrome of rigor and cold.
刺皮无伤肉，肉伤则内动脾，脾动则七十二日四季之月，病腹胀烦[《甲乙》“烦”下有“满”字]，不嗜食。
"When pricking the skin, the muscle must not be hurt, if the muscle is injured, it will affect the spleen inside. When the spleen can not bring its functions into full play, the patient will have the syndromes of restlessness, distention of abdomen and will be reluctant to eat in the last eighteen days of every season when the spleen energy is abundant.
刺肉无伤脉，脉伤则内动心，心动则夏病心痛。
"When pricking the muscle, the vessel must not be hurt, if the vessel is injured, it will affect the heart. When the heart can not bring its functions into full play, heartache will occur in summer.
刺脉无伤筋，筋伤则内动肝，肝动则春病热而筋駞。
"When pricking the vessel, the tendon must not be hurt, if the tendon is injured, if will affect the liver inside. When the liver can not bring its functions into full play, the disease of heart will occur in spring, and the tendons of the patient will also become flaccid.
刺筋无伤骨，骨伤则内动肾，肾动则冬病胀、腰痛。
"When pricking the tendon, the bone must not be hurt, if the bone is injured, it will affect the kidney inside. When the kidney can not bring its functions into full play, the syndromes of abdominal distention and lumbago will occur in winter.
刺骨无伤髓，髓伤则销铄䯒酸，体解㑊然不去矣。
"When pricking the bone, the marrow must not be hurt, if the marrow is affected, the marrow will be withered gradually to cause aching pain of the legs and thighs, the patient will be tired and weak and reluctant to move."
