帝日:有病口甘者,病名为何?何以得之?岐伯日:此五气[《医说》引“五”作“土”]之溢也,名日脾瘅。夫五味入口,藏于胃,脾为之行其精气,津液在脾[《外治》作“溢在于脾”],故令人口甘也;此肥美之所发也,此人必数食甘美而多肥也,肥者令人内热,甘者令人中满,故其气上溢,转为消渴。治之以兰,除陈气也。
Yellow Emperor asked:"Some people have sweet taste in the mouth, what is the disease, and how does it come about?" Qibo said:"It is due to the overflowing of the earth-energy, and the disease is called pidan (heat and wetness in spleen). Generally, the food enters through the mouth, stores in the stomach, be converted into the refined substance by the spleen and being transported to various organs. At present, however, the spleen fails to operate normally, and the up-flowing of the body fluid will cause sweetness in the mouth. This disease is seduced by the fine and delicious food, and most of the patients with this disease usually have nice and delicious food. The fatty and delicious food can cause the inner heat of a man, and the sweet taste can cause one to have fullness and distention of the chest, and the up-flowing of the spleen energy may be transferred into diabetes. It should be treated with stem the of orchid which can remove the staleness heat."
帝日:有病口苦取阳陵泉[明抄本“有病”下并无“口苦取阳陵泉”六字],口苦者病名为何?何以得之?岐伯曰:病名曰胆瘅。夫肝者中之将也[林校云:“按《甲乙》日:胆者中精之府,五藏取决于胆,咽为之使,疑“肝者中之将也”文误],取决于胆,咽为之使。此人者,数谋虑不决,故胆虚气上溢[《甲乙》“胆”下无“虚”字,按“溢”误,应作“嗌”],而口为之苦。治之以胆募俞,治在《阴阳十二官相使》中。
Yellow Emperor asked:"Some patients have bitterness in the mouth, what is the disease and how does it come about?" Qibo said:"The disease is called Dandan (heat and wetness in gallbladder). The gallbladder is a clean hollow organ, it determins the conditions of all the five viscera and also controls the pharynx and larynx. The patient with Dandan disease is always gloomy with continuous worry, so that the gallbladder can not bring its normal functions into full play, and the bile will be overflowing upwards and cause bitterness in the mouth. When treating, prick the front Mu-point of gallbladder (Riyue point GB. 24) and Danshu point (BL.19). The principle of treating is written in the《Mutual-assistance of the Twelve Organs of Yin and Yang》."
帝曰:有癃者,一日数十溲,此不足也。身热如炭[《太素》“炭”下有“火”字],颈膺如格,人迎躁盛,喘息气逆,此有余也。太阴脉微细如发者[明抄本“细”上无“微”字],此不足也,其病安在?名为何病?岐伯日:病在太阴,其盛在胃,颇在肺,病名曰厥,死不治,此所谓得五有余二不足也。帝日:何谓五有余二不足?岐伯日:所谓五有余者[张琦说:“‘五’字衍,下“五病’之‘五’字亦衍”],五病之气有余也,二不足者[张琦说:“‘二’字衍”],亦病气之不足也。今外得五有余,内得二不足,此其身不表不里,亦正死[《甲乙》“正死”作“死证”]明矣。
Yellow Emperor asked:"Some one has frequent micturition with several decades of times in a day which is the case of insufficiency; his body is hot like charcoal, seems to have something blocking between the neck and the chest, his Renying pulse is irritating, he has rapid breathing and adverseness of vital energy, which show the cases of having a surplus; his Cunkou pulse is thin like hair, and it is the symbol of insufficiency. Now, where is the disease located and what is the disease?" Qibo said:"The origin of the disease is in the Taiyin Channel, it is caused by the excessive heat of the stomach, and its syndrome is manifested on the lung. The disease is called jue-syndrome, and it is a fatal disease. The disease is caused by the five cases of having a surplus and the two cases of being insufficient."
Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the five cases of having a surplus and the two cases of being insufficient?" Qibo said:"The so-called having a surplus is indicating there is a surpuls in the evil-energy, and the so-called being insufficient indicates the insufficiency of the evil-energy. Since, at present, there are five kinds of pulse conditions and other manifestations showing surplus in the exterior (five cases of surplus: hot like charcoal in the body, obstruction between neck and chest, irritation of the Renying pulse, rapid breathing, and adverseness of the vital energy) and there are two kinds of pulse conditions and other manifestations showing insufficient in the interior (two cases of insufficient: the pulse is thin like hair, several decades times of urination in a day), the patient can not be treated from the superfices, nor can be treated from the interior, so, he is having a fatal disease"
帝曰:人生而有病癫疾者[《太平御览》《医说》引“而”下无“有”字],病名曰何?安所得之?岐伯日:病名为胎病。此得之在母腹中时,其母有所大惊[《千金》《圣济总录》“所”下并有“数”字],气上而不下,精气并居,故令子发为巅疾[《太平御览》引“发”下无“为”字]也。
Yellow Emperor asked: "Some people have epilepsy since he was born, what is the disease, and how does it come about?" Qibo said:"It is called the infantile epilepsy. It is because the mother was frightended severely several times when the baby was in her womb, her vital energy reversed upwards and failed to come down, and the assembling of the energy of fright caused the baby to have epilepsy when he was born."
帝日;有病瘦然如有水状[《甲乙》“水”下并有“气”字],切其脉大紧,身无痛者,形不瘦,不能食,食少,名为何病?岐伯曰:病生在肾(《甲乙》“生”作“主”,名为肾风,肾风而不能食,善惊[《甲乙》“惊”作“不”],惊已,心气[《太素》“心”下无“气”字]痿者死。帝日:善。
Yellow Emperor asked:"Someone is swelling like edema in his face, his pulse condition is gigantic and tight, he has no pain in the body and is not emaciated, but he can not eat or can eat only a little, what is the disease?" Qibo said:"The root of this disease is in the kidney, and it is called the wind-evil syndrome of kidney. When the patient of wind-evil syndrome come to the stage of failing to take food or can eat only very little, if he often being frightened or being firghtened continuously, he will have heart faliurs and die."
