病能论篇/Bing Neng Lun
(On Various Diseases)
黄帝问日:人病胃脘痈者，诊当何如?岐伯对日:诊此者当侯胃脉，其脉当[《圣济总录》“脉”下并无“当”字]沉细[《甲乙》“细”作“樯”，下“细”字同)，沉细者气逆，逆者人迎甚盛，甚盛则热;人迎者胃脉也，逆而盛，则热聚于胃口而不行，故胃脘为痈也。
Yellow Emperor asked:"How can one diagnose the carbuncle of the gastric cavity?" Qibo answered:"In diagnosing this kind of disease, the stomach pulse should be inspected first, In this disease, the fuyang pulse (also called Chongyang pulse, located over the anterior at the dorsum of foot, reflecting the disorders of the spleen and stomach of the patient) must be sunken and rough, which reflects the reversing up of the stomach energy; when the stomach enery is rsversing up, the Renying (pulse of the cervical arteries lateral to the thyroid cartilage) will pulsate severely, which shows there is fever in the patient. As the Renying pulse is the artery of the stomach, and the sunken and rough fuyang pulse is the unfavourable condition of the energy, when the pulsation of the Renying pulse is florishing, it shows the heat is accumulating in the stomach without dispersing, thus, the carbuncle will occur in the gastric cavity."
帝日:善。人有卧而有所不安者何也?岐伯曰:藏有所伤，及精有所之寄则安[《甲乙》作“情有所倚，则卧不安”]，故人不能悬其病也。
Yellow Emperor said:"Good. Some people can not sleep calmly and what is the reason?" Qibo said:“This is because there is injury in his viscera, or his sentiment is rather radical. If the two reasons are not removed, he can not sleep calmly.”
帝曰:人之不得偃仰者何也?岐伯曰:肺者藏之盖也，肺气盛则脉大，脉大则不得偃卧，论在《奇恒阴阳》中。
Yellow Emperor asked: “ Some people can not lie on his back, and why is it?” Qibo said: “The lung situates on the highest position and covers all the other organs, when the evil-energy is filling abundantly in the lung, the collaterals of the lung will be swelling, and when it is swelling, one can not lie on his back. There was such a discussion in the (Extraordinary and Normal Yin and Yang) of ancient times.”
帝曰:有病厥者，诊右脉沈而紧，左脉浮而迟，不然病主安在?岐伯曰:冬诊之，右脉固当沉紧，此应四时，左脉浮而迟，此逆四时，在左当主病在肾，颇关在肺，当腰痛也。帝曰:何以言之?岐伯曰:少阴脉贯肾络肺，今得肺脉，肾为之病，故肾为腰痛之病也。
Yellow Emperor asked: “ Some people become ill due to the adverseness of the vital energy, according to palpation, the pulse of his right hand is sunken and tight, and the pulse of his left hand is floating and slow, and where is the disease?" Qibo said: “In winter, if the right pulse is sunken and tight, it is normal as it is accordance with the four seasons; if the left pulse is floating and slow in winter, it is abnormal as it is against the four seasons, and there is disease in the kidney. As the floating pulse condition is about similar to the lung pulse which is floating, the patient will have lumbago.”
Yellow Emperor asked:" Why is it so?" Qibo said:" The Shaoyin Channel runs through the kidney and connects the lung, since, at present, the floating and slow pulse occur in winter, it shows the deficiency of the kidney energy. When there is disease in the kidney, the patient will suffer from lumbago."
帝曰:善。有病颈痈者，或石治之，或针灸「《甲乙》“或”下并有“以”字，柯校云:“依下文，‘灸’字疑衍”治之，而皆已，其真[《甲乙》“真”作“治”]安在?岐伯曰:此同名异等者也。夫痈气之息者，宜以针开除[“除”字疑衍]去之，夫气盛血聚者，宜石而写之，此所谓同病异治也。
Yellow Emperor said:"Good. To the patient of the carbuncle on neck, sometimes it is treated with stone needle, some-times it is treated with metal needle, and they can all be cured, and why it is so?" Qibo said:“This due to the diseases are having the same name but belong to different types. If the carbuncle is formed by the accumulation of the stagnated energy, it should be pricked by the metal needle to open the acupoint and clear away the evil-energy; if the carbuncle is matured with pus together with abundant stagnated energy and blood, they should be let out with the stone needle. It is the so called treating the same disease in different ways."
