痿论篇/Wei Lun
(On Flaccidity)
黄帝问日:五藏使人痿何也?岐伯对日:肺主身之皮毛，心主身之血脉，肝主身之筋膜，脾主身之肌肉，肾主身之骨髓，故肺热叶焦，则皮[《甲乙》“则皮”上有“焦”字毛虚弱急薄，著则生痿蹩也;心气热，则下脉厥而上，上则下脉虚，虚则生脉痿，枢折挈(“挈”上疑脱“不”字]，胫纵而不任地也;肝气热，则胆泄口苦筋膜乾，筋膜乾则筋[《太素》“则”下无“筋”字]急而挛，发为筋痿;脾气热，则胃乾而渴，肌肉不仁，发为肉痿;肾气热，则腰脊不举，骨枯而髓(《难经・十五难》“枯”下无“而”字)减，发为骨痿。
Yellow Emperor asked:“ All the five solid organs can cause flaccidity of a man, and why is it?" Qibo answered:"The lung takes charge of the skins and hairs of the whole body, the heart takes charge of the channels of the whole body, the liver takes charge of the tendons of the whole body, the spleen takes charge of the muscles of the whole body, and the kidney
takes charge of the bone marrows of the whole body.
"Thus, when there is heat in the lung, the lobes of the lung will be withered and the skin and hair will become weak and pressing; when the case is severe. flaccidity of feet will occur.
"When there is heat in the heart, the descending energy in the channel will ascend reversely to cause abundance on the upper part of the body and deficiency in the lower, and the lower deficiency will cause the vascular flaccidity-syndrome; the patient will feel like the broken of the joints which can not contact with each other, and his shank will become flabby to cause inability of walking.
"When there is heat in the liver, the bile will rise up to cause bitterness in the mouth, the aponeurosis will become withered due to malnourishment, and when the aponeurosis are withered, flaccidity-syndrome involving the tendon will occur.
"When there is heat in the spleen, it will cause the dryness of the body fluid in the stomach, the patient will be thirsty and has numbness in the muscle to cause muscular flaccidity-syndrome.
"When there is heat in the kidney, the seminal fluid will be exhausted, the loins and the spine will be unable to move about, the withering of the bone and the reduction of the marrow will cause the occurence of the flaccidity-syndrome involving the bone.
帝曰:何以得之?岐伯日:肺者，藏之长也，为心之盖也;有所失亡，所求[滑抄本作“求之”]不得，则发肺鸣，鸣则肺热叶焦[《甲乙》无“故曰”以下九字]，故日，五藏因肺热叶焦，发为痿蹩，此之谓也。悲哀太甚，则胞[高世械说:“胞”应作“包”，“包络”心包之络也]络绝，胞络绝，则阳气内动，发则心下崩[《圣济总录》“胞络”以下十三字作“阳气动中”]，数搜血也。故《本病》日:大经空虚，发为肌[《太素》“肌”作“脉”]痹，传为脉痿。思想无穷，所愿不得，意淫[《素问校伪》引古抄本“淫”作“浮”]于外，入房太甚，宗筋弛纵，发为筋痿，及为白淫，故《下经》日:筋痿者，生于肝[《太素》“于”下无“肝”字]使内也。有渐于湿，以水为事，若有所留，居处相[《甲乙》“相”作“伤”]湿，肌肉濡渍，痹而不仁，发为肉痿。故《下经》日:肉瘘者，得之湿地也。有所远行劳倦，逢大热而渴，渴则阳气内伐[《三因方》卷九《五痿证例》引“伐”作“乏”]，内伐则[明抄二“热”上无“内伐则”三字]热舍于肾，肾者水藏也，今水不胜火，则骨枯而髓虚[《甲乙》“虚”作“空”]，故足不任身，发为骨痿。故《下经》日:骨瘘者，生于大热也。
Yellow Emperor asked: "How does the flaccidity come about?" Qibo said:"Lung is the leader one among various viscera, and it is the canopy of the heart, when one's wish can not be satisfied and he becomes very disapointed, his heart-fire will scorch the lung to cause noise in respiration, and the heat of lung will cause its fluid to become exbausted This is the reason of the occurence of the flaccidity of feet.
"When one is in excessive sorrow, the pericardium will be injured, and the Yang energy will stir inside to cause hematochezia. So,it is stated in the《Chapter of Origin of Disease》when the large channel is deficient, it will cause channel bi-syndrome, and ultimately become the vascular flaccidity-syndrome.
"If one deliberates excessively when his wish is not fulfilling to cause his thought always floating outside, or when one is over-fatigue in sexual activities to cause the flabby of the tendons, tendinous bi-syndrome and go so far as to have nocturnal emission or leucorrhea.
So, it is stated in the: 《Lower Classics》, the tendinous bi-disease is caused by excessive sexual activities'.
"When one contracts the wet-evil and is addicted to drink, the wetness-heat will retain inside; as he resides in a wet place, the wetness will invade from outside and cuase numbness of the muscle. The wetness both inside and outside will cause muscular flaccidity-syndrome.
So, it is stated in the《Lower Classics》: 'the muscular flaccidity-syndrome is caused by the protracted living in the wet place'.
"When one is tired after a long jurney in hot weather and become thirsty which is a phenominon of the deficient Yangming energy inside, the asthenic heat will invade into the kidney. As the kidney is an organ pertaining to water, and presently, the water is unable to overcome the heat of fire, the marrow will be emptied, the two feet can no longer support the body, and the flaccidity-syndrome involving the bone will occur. So, it is stated in the《Lower Classics》:'the flaccidity-syndrome involving the bone is caused by the excessive heat.'"
