风论篇/Feng Lun
(On Wind-evil)
黄帝问曰:风之伤人也，或为寒热，或为热中，或为寒中，或为疠[《甲乙》《千金》“疠”并作“厉”]风，或为偏枯，或为风也，其病各异，其名不同[明抄二无“或为”以下十二字]，或内至五藏六府，不知其解，愿闻其说。
Yellow Emperor asked:" When the wind-evil invades the body, some cause the patient to have chilliness and fever, some cause the retention of heat-evil in the middle warmer, some cause the retention of cold-evil in the middle warmer, some cause leprosy, some cause hemiplegia, and some invade into the interior to reach the viscera. I don't know the reason, and I hope you can tell me."
岐伯对日:风气藏于皮肤之间，内不得通[《千金》《医心方》“通”并作“泄”]，外不得泄[《千金》、《医心方》“泄”并作“散”];风者善行而数变，媵理开则洒[《甲乙“洒”作“凄”]然寒，闭则热而闷，其寒也则衰食饮，其热也则消肌肉，故使人怢慄而不能食，名曰寒热。
Qibo answered:"When the wind-evil invades into the skin, it can not be dispersed to the interior, nor can it be diffused to the exterior. "
The wind is swift in moving and can be developed into various diseases, when the stria of the skin is open, it will cause one to feel cold, when the stria is closed, it will cause one to have feverish sensation accompanied with restless. When the patient has cold, his food and drink will be reduced, then he has fever, his muscle will become emaciated. Thus, when one has no appetite and reluctant to eat, he has the disease of cold and heat.
风气与阳明入胃，循脉而上至目内眦，其人肥则风气不得外泄[滑抄本“泄”作“出”]，则为热中而目黄;人[《圣济总录》引“人”上有“其”字]瘦则外泄而寒[“而寒”二字衍文]，则为寒中而泣[《千金》“泣”作“泪”]出。
"The wind-evil enters into the stomach through the Yangming Channel and goes up along the channel to reach the inner canthus of eyes. If the patient is fat, the wind-evil can hardly be diffused to the exterior, when the retention is protracted, it will become the retention of the heat-evil in the middle warmer, and the eyeballs of the patient will become yellow; if the patient is thin, his Yang energy can easily be dispersed to the exterior, it will become the retention of cold-evil in the middle warmer, and the patient will be falling tears often.
风气与太阳俱入，行诸脉俞，散于分肉[“分肉”二字误倒，据王注应作“肉分”，谓内之分理]之间，与卫[《病源》“卫”作“血”、《太平圣惠方》“干”作“搏”]气相干，其道不利，故使肌肉愤瞋[《太素》“偾”作“贲”，“疡”作“伤”]而有疡，卫气有所凝而不行，故其肉有不仁也。疠者，有荣气热胕[“有荣气热胕”应为“荣卫热”]，其气不清，故使其鼻柱坏而色败，皮肤疡溃，风寒客于脉而不去，名日疠风，或名日寒热[滑抄本无此五字]。
When the wind-evil invades the body through the Taiyang Channel, it reaches the shu-points of various channels, spreads between the muscle striae and mixes with the blood and energy, in this way, the routs of the energy will become obstructed, and the muscle will be swelling up to become injured. If the Wei-energy is stagnated to effect its circulation, the muscle will become numb and have no sence to the pain and itching.
"Leprosy is caused by the heat of both the Rong and Wei energies, when the energy and blood are not refined and injures the nose bridge, the complexion will be deteriorated and the skin become worn-out. As the protracted retention of the wind-evil in the channel can not be removed, it causes leprosy.
以春甲乙[《外台》“甲乙”下有“日”字，下丙丁等同]伤于风者为肝风，以夏丙丁伤于风者为心风，以季夏戊己伤于邪[《甲乙》《千金》“邪”并作“风”]者为脾风，以秋庚辛中于邪[《甲乙》“千金”“中于邪”并作“伤于风”]者为肺风，以冬壬癸中于邪者为肾风。
"When one is injured by wind-evil on the Jia and Yi days of spring, it is the liver-wind; when one is injured by the evil-wind on the Bing and Ding days in summer, it is the heart-wind; when one is injured by the wind-evil on the Wu and Ji days in late summer (long summer) it is the spleen-wind; when one is injured by the wind-evil on the Geng and Xin days in autumn, it is the lung-wind; when one is injured by the wind-evil on the Ren and Gui days in winter, it is the kidney-wind.
风[《太素》《甲乙》“风”下并有“气”字]中五藏六府之俞，亦为藏府之风，各入其门户所[《太素》“所”作“之”]中，则为偏风。风气[《太平圣惠方》“气”作“邪”]循风府而上，则为脑风。风入系头[按《甲乙》注云:“一本作‘头系””。头系是头中的目系、目系，谓目睛人脑之系]，则为目风，眼[《太素》“眼”作“眠”，“眠寒”二字属下节]寒。饮酒中风，则为漏风。入房汗出中风，则为内风。新沐中风，则为首风。久风入中，则为肠风飧[《千金》“肠风”下无“飧泄”二字]泄。外在腠理，则为泄风。故[《千金》“故”下有“日”字]风者百病之长也，至其变化，乃为他病也，无常方，然致有风[吴注本“有”作“自”]气也。
"When the wind-evil invades into the shu-points of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, it will become the wind of the five organs and the six hollow organs. Regardless of collateral, channel, viscus or bowel, when any of them is invaded by the wind-evil, it will become the residing of wind-evil on one side of the body.
"After the invasion of the wind-evil, it goes up along the Fengfu Channel to reach the brain, and brain-wind syndrome will occur; when the wind-evil enters into the series of the eye, the eye-wind syndrome will occur.
"When one catches cold during sleep or contracts the wind-evil after drunken, the perforated-wind syndrome will occur.
"When one perspires in sexual intercourse and contracts wind-evil, the endogenous wind syndrome will occur, when one contracts wind evil immediataly after the washing of the hair, the head-wind syndrome will occur.
"When the wind-evil retains in the striae of skin for a long time and injures the spleen and stomach, the fresh blood in stool caused by wind-evil will occur.
"As to the cold-evil retained in between the striae outside, it will become the endogenous wind-evil.
"Thus, the wind-evil is the main factor to induce various diseases, it has many variations, and has no regular patern when it turns to become other diseases. But, in the last analysis, the diseases are stemmed from the invasion of the wind-evil."
