中医翻译例文——刺疟篇/On Treating Malaria with Acupuncture

肾疟者,令人酒洒[《甲乙》《千金翼方》《外台》“洒”作“棲”]然,腰脊痛,宛转[《医垒元戎》引“宛转”上有“不能”二字],大便难,目眴眴[《病源》“目”下有“眩”字]然,手足寒,刺足太阳少阴。

胃疟者,令人且[《太素》“且”作“疽”]病也,善饥而不能食,食而[《千金翼亏》无“食而”二字]支满腹大,刺足阳明太阴横脉出血。

疟发身方热,刺跗上动脉,开其空,出其[《甲乙》“出”下无“其”字]血,立寒;疟方欲寒,刺手阳明太阴,足阳明太阴。疟脉满大急,刺背俞,用中针,傍伍麼俞各一,适肥瘦出其[《甲乙》“出”下无“其”字]血也。疟脉小实急,灸胫少阴,刺指井。疟脉满大急,刺背俞,用五胀俞背俞各一,适行至于血也[林校云:“疟脉满”以下二十二字与前文重复,当从删消”]。

When the body is having a fever after the attack of malaria, prick the artery on the dorsum of foot to open the acupoint, after the blood is let out, the fever will be declined.

If the patient of malaria is about to become cold, it should prick the Hand Yangming and Taiyin Channels, and the Foot Yangming and Taiyin Channels.

If the pulse condition of the patient with malaria is full, large and rapid, it should prick the shu-points at the back with the needle of middle size, prick each from the five shu-points near the lateral chest wall below the axillae and let out some blood according to the stoutness and leanness of the patient.

If the pulse condition of the patient is small, full and rapid, treat the points of Shaoyin Channel on the shank with moxibustion, and prick the Well points at the tips of fingers and toes.

疟脉缓大虚,便宜[胡本,谈本,赵本“便”下无“宜”字]用药,不宜用针。凡治疟,先发如食顷,乃可以治,过之则失时也。诸疟而脉不见[《甲乙》“而”作“如”],刺十指间出血,血去必已,先视身之赤如小豆者尽取之。十二疟者,其发各不同时,察其病形,以知其何脉之病也。先其发[《太素》“先其”下有“病”字]时如食顷而刺之,一刺则衰,二刺则知,三刺则已;不已,刺舌下两脉出血,不已,刺郄中盛经出血,又刺项已下侠脊者必已。舌下两脉者,廉泉也。

When the pulse condition of the patient with malaria is slow, large and weak, it should be treated with medicine instead of with acupuncture.

In treating malaria, it should be treated before the attack of about the period of taking a meal, if this period of time is passed, the oppotunity will be missed.

To various kinds of malaria of which the pulse condition is hidden, it should prick bastly between the ten fingers until bleeding, when the blood is let out, the evil-energy will be removed. When there is some red points like adzuk beans appear on the skin, it should be prickd to cause them vanish.

The twelve kinds of malaria stated above are different in appearance when attacking, when examining the symptoms, one can distiguish to what channel the disease belongs. If the pricking is carried out in advance of about the period of a meal, the evil-energy can be alleviated after pricking once, to have significant curative effect of the disease after pricking twice; and the patient can be recovered after pricking thrice. If the patient is not recovered, prick the two blood vessels under the tongue until bleeding. If he is not recovered again, prick the Weizhong (Popliteal Centre BL. 40) point of which the blood is abundant in the channel and collaterals until bleeding, then, prick the Dazhu (Great Axle BL. 11) and the Fengmen (Windy Gate BL. 12) points under the neck, and the disease will sure to be recovered. The two blood vessels under the tongue are the Lianchuan (Tongue Spring RN. 23) points of Ren Channel.

刺疟者,必先问其病之所先发者,先刺之。先头痛及重者,先刺头上及两额两眉间出血。先项背痛者,先刺之。先腰脊痛者,先刺郄中出血。先手臂痛者,先刺手少阴阳明十指间。先足胫疫痛者,先刺足阳明十指[按“足阳明”疑应作“足阴阳”]间出血。风疟,疟发则汗出恶风,刺三阳经背俞之血者。䯒痠痛甚[《甲乙》“痛”下无“甚”字],按之不可,名曰胕[吴本“胕”作“附”]髓病,以镵针针绝骨出血,立已。身体小痛,刺至阴[《甲乙》无“至阴”二字,“刺”字连下读],诸阴之井无出血,间日一刺。疟不渴,间日而作,刺足太阳;渴而间日作,刺足少阳;温疟汗不出,为五十九刺。

When treating malaria by pricking, it must be made clear by asking the patient which part of the body has the pain first, and the part should be pricked first. If the patient has pain and heaviness on the head first, it must prick the head, the two temples and between the two eyebows first until bleeding; when the disease attacks the neck and back first, it should prick the neck and back first; when the loins and spine is painful first, prick the Weizhong (Popliteal Centre BL. 40) point first until bleeding. When it is painful in the arm first, prick the points between the ten fingers of the Hand Yin and Yang Channels.

When it is sore in the shank first, prick the points between the ten fingers of the Foot Yin and Yang Channels.

When the wind-malaria attacks, the patient perspires and has aversion to wind, prick the shu-points of the Taiyang Channel at the back until bleeding.

When the shank is sore and the patient can not withstand pressing, it is called the disease of the marrow in bone, prick the Juegu (ie. Xuanzhoug or Suspended Bell GB. 39) point until bleeding and the pain will be relieved.

If the body is painful slightly, prick the Jing points of the Various Yin Channels every other day without letting out any blood.

If the patient of malaria is not thirsty and the disease attacks every other day, prick the Foot Taiyang Channel. If the patient is thirsty and the disease attacks every other day, prick the Foot Shaoyang Channel.

To the patients of warm-type malaria with no perspiration, apply the Fifty-nine Pricking Therapy.
