逆调论篇/Ni Tiao Lun
(On Maladjustments)
黄帝问日:人身非常[于鬯说:“‘常’本‘裳’字”]温也，非常[应作裳]热也，为之热而烦满者何也?岐伯对日:阴气少而阳气胜，故热而烦满也。
Yellow Emperor asked: "When one has fever and feels oppressed but not owning to the wearing of warm clothes, what is the reason?" Qibo answered:" It is due to the deficiency of Yin energy and the overabundant of Yang energy, in this case, it will cause the patient to have fever and feel disquieted."
帝日:人身非衣寒也，中非有寒气[《太素》卷三十《身寒》“寒”下无“气”字]也，寒从中生[滑抄本“生”作“出”]者何?岐伯日:是人多痹气也[《甲乙》“痹”下无“气也”二字]，阳气少，阴气多，故身寒如从水中出。
Yellow Emperor said: "When one is wearing thin dresses to the weather, and has no cold-evil inside, but the cold is like sending from inside, what is the reason?" Qibo said:"It is because of the piatient has contracted bi-syndrome, his yang energy is deficient and his Yin energy is plenty, and his body is cold as if he has just come out from the cool water."
帝日:人有四支[按“四支”下似脱“先”字]热，逢风寒[《全生指迷方》引无“寒”字。“如火”应作“于火”]如炙如火者何也?岐伯曰:是人者，阴气虛，阳气盛，四支[《甲乙》“四支”下有“热”字]者阳也，两阳相得，而阴气虚少，少水[《太素》“水”上无“少”字，“灭”作“减”]不能灭盛火，而阳独治，独治者，不能生长也，独胜而止耳，逢风而如炙如火者，是人当肉烁也。
Yellow Emperor said:"Some people have fever in the extremities first, when he encounters wind, he will be hot as if being scorched by the fire, and why is it?" Qibo said: "This kind of people is asthenic and deficient in Yin energy and is overabundant in Yang energy, since the extremities belong to Yang, and when the two Yangs are combining, it will cause the Yin energy to become asthenic and deficient so as not be able to reduce the overabumdant Yang fire, and the Yang energy will be solely overabundant in the exterior. When the Yang energy is prosperous all by itself in the exterior, it will stop growing. Whenever the wind is encountered, the patient will be hot like being scorched, and his muscle will become emaciated gradually."
帝日:人有身寒，汤火不能热，厚衣不能温，然不冻栗，是为何病?岐伯曰:是人者，素肾气胜，以水为事;太阳气衰，肾脂枯不长;一水不能胜两火[高世械“‘一水’七字以下七字，重于此，衍文”]，肾者水也，而生于骨，肾不生[《圣济总录》卷二十引“生”作“荣”]，则髓不能满，故寒甚至骨也。所以不能冻[据王注“能”字衍]栗者，肝一阳也[孙鼎宜说:“当作‘胆一阳也’”]，心二阳也[孙鼎宜说“当作‘心二阴也’”]，肾孤藏也，一水不能胜[《甲乙》“胜”下有“上下”二字]二火，故不能冻栗，病名口骨痹，是人当挛节也。
Yellow Emperor said: "There is a kind of people who has cold in the body but are not feeling hot when drawing near to the fire, nor feeling warm when wearing thick clothes, yet they are not shivering with cold, and what is the disease?" Qibo said: "This kind of people always has an overabundant kidney energy, they depend on water and wetness to earn their livings which cause their Taiyang energy to become debilitating, and their kidney-adipose stop growing. Kidney is a viscus of water and takes charge of the bone, when the kidney energy is not prosperous, the bone marrow will not be abundant. The reason of his not shivering with cold is: the gallbladder is the prime minister-fire of the first Yang, and the heart is the monarch-fire of the second Yin, kidney is a solitary viscus, and a single kidney water will not be able to overcome the two fires above and bellow of the heart and gallbladder, so, in spite of the coldness, he is not shivering. The disease is called the bone bi-syndrome, and the patient with this syndrome will suffer from contracture of the joints.
