评热病论篇/Ping Re Bing Lun
(On Febrile Disease)
黄帝问日:有病温者，汗出辄[《伤寒百证歌》引“辄”作“而身”]复热，而脉躁疾不为汗衰[《病论》卷十《温病候》“疾”作“病”。“脉躁”应断句，“疾”字属下读]，狂言不能食，病名为何?岐伯对日:病名阴阳交，交者[《病论》“交”上有“阴阳”二字]死也。帝日:愿闻其说。岐伯日:人所以汗出者，皆生于谷，谷生于精。今邪气交争于骨肉而得汗者，是邪却而精胜也。精胜，则当能食[《太素》卷二十五《热病说》“当”下无“能”字]而不复热[《太素》《外台》引“热”上无“复”字]，复热者邪气也，汗者精气也；今汗出而辄复热者，是邪胜也，不能食者，精无俾[《太素》作“精母”，精母，瘴也]也，病而留者[《脉经》《伤寒补亡论》并作“汗而留热者”]，其寿可立而倾也。且夫《热论》日：汗出而脉尚躁盛者死。今脉不与汗相应，此不胜[《病论》“胜”作“称”]其病也，其死明矣。狂言者是失志，失志者死。今见三死，不见一生，虽愈必死也。
Yellow Emperor asked:"The patient with febrile disease still has fever and irritating pulse after sweating, his disease is not alleviated after sweating, he also has ravings and he refuses to eat, what is the disease?" Qibo answered: "It is called the Yinyang Complex and it is a fatal disease."
Yellow Emperor said:"I hope to hear about it." Qibo said: "The sweat is stemmed from water and cereals which are converted into refined energy for nourishing the whole body, when the refined energy of water and cereals is excreted to the surface of skin, it is sweat. In the combat of evil-energy against the healthy-energy bet ween the bone and muscle, if the refined-energy wins, the evil-energy will be excreted along with the sweat, and the patient will be recovered, as he has no more fever, and the water and cereals can be converted again, he will have appetite to eat. If the patient still has fever after perspiration, it shows the refined-energy has been overcome by the evil-energy, the sweating can no longer let out the evil-energy, but can only consume the essence. When the evil-energy is overabundant and the refined-energy is debilitating, the water and cereals can not be converted, and the patient will
refusc to cat. Stop cating will cause the deficiency of the refined fluid and cause the heat-evil to become overabundant even more. When the patient has plenty of sweat but the fever does not come down, the death of the patient is expected at any moment, as it is stated in (On Heat): when the patient has perspiration with an irritating and overabundant pulse condition, the patient will die': presently, the pulse condition is not in conformity with the condition of perspiration, and the refined-energy is unable to overcome the evil-energy, so the symptom of death is evident; as to the ravings of the patient, it is due to the loss of consciousness, and the loss of consciousness is also the symptom of death. Now, the patient has have three symptoms of death without any lease of life, although there are some conditions turning to the better, the patient will die as well."
帝曰：有病身热汗出烦满，烦满不为汗解，此为何病?岐伯曰:汗出而身热者，风也；汗出而烦满不解者，厥也，病名曰风厥。帝日:愿卒闻之。岐伯曰:巨阳主气[《甲乙》作“太阳为诸阳主气”]，故先受邪;少阴与其为表里也，得热则上从之，从之则厥也。帝日:治之奈何?岐伯曰:表里刺之，饮之服汤[《太素》“饮”下无“服”字]。
Yellow Emperor asked:"Some patients who have fever, have sweat and has the disquieted mood at the same time, that is, the disquieted mood can not be eased up by perspiration, what is the disease?" Qibo said:"When a patient has fever and sweat at the same time, it is due to the wind-evil; when the sweating can not ease up the disquietness, it is due to the reversing up of the vital energy, and the disease is called the wind-jue." Yellow Emperor said:" I hope to hear about it." Qibo said:"The Taiyang Channel dominates all the energies of Yang, and Taiyang Channel is the superficies of the body, so it is easy to be invaded. The Shaoyin Channel and the Taiyang Channel are the superficies and the interior, if the Shaoyin Channel is reversing up under the effect of the fever of Taiyang Channel, it will become the jue-syndrome."Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat it?" Qibo said:"Prick the points of the Taiyang and Shaoyin channels and take decoctions."
帝日:劳风为病何如?岐伯曰:劳风法[《医垒元戎》引作“发”]在肺下，其为病也，使人强上[于鬯说:“‘上’疑‘工’之误，强工即强项”]冥视，唾出若涕，恶风而振寒，此为劳风之病[按“此为”六字衍，《干金》无此六字]。帝日:治之奈何?岐伯日:以救傀仰。
巨阳引。精者三日，中年者五日，不精者七日，咳出青黄涕，其状如[《太素》“如”下有“稠”字]脓，大如弹丸，从口中若鼻中出[“鼻中出”下脱“为善”二字，应据《千金》《医心方》补]，不出则伤肺[《千金》“不出”上有“若”字]，伤肺则死也。
Yellow Emperor asked: "What is lao feng (wind syndrome when being overstrained) disease?" Qibo said:"The initial attack of lao feng disease is under the lung, its syndromes appear to be stiffness of the neck and head, dim of the eyesight, spitting sticky sputum, has an aversion to wind, and chill. " Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat it?" Qibo said: "The patient should pay attention to rest chiefly, and next, Yang energy of the Taiyang Channel should be induced to remove the evil energy of depression with the help of taking medicine. With the treatment, a strong man can be recovered in three days, a middle aged man with weaker energy can be recovered in five days, and an old man with deficient energy can be recovered in seven days. The patient will cough up sputum in greenish-yellow colour, like sticky pus in the size of an ammunition ball. It is the best choice to remove the sticky sputum from the mouth or nose. If it can not be cough out, it will injure the lung, and when the lung is injured, the patient will die."
