As是英语中出现频率较高的一个词，用法十分繁多。在翻译时要注意它的用法。

（一）as作介词时的用法

as作为介词常译为“好像（某人）”，“作为，是（某种身份）”，例如：

1. I respect him as a writer and as a man.

我尊重他这个作家，也尊重他这个人。

2. As his private secretary she has access to all his letters. 

作为他的私人秘书，她能接触到他所有的信件。

3. The climate of China is mild as a whole.

中国大陆的气候，就整体来说，是温和的。

4. We should receive him as a distinguished guest.

我们应该按其贵宾的身份来接待他。

5. The world is as a stage.

世界是个舞台。

（二）as作副词时的用法

as用作副词时，常用作“as...as..”结构，用在副词和形容词之前，以构成比较句型。这个结构中的第一个as引导表语从句或宾补从句，第二个as根据后面所连接的成分，或是连词，或是介词。可译为“像”或“……与等同”。例如：

1. Things are not as they seem to be.

事情并不像它表面上看起来那样。

2. He does not play half as well as his sister.

他演奏的水平不及他姐姐的一半。

3. He recited as much of the poem as he could remember. 

他把书中记住的都背诵出来了。

（三）as作连词时的用法

1.as作从属连词引导的状语从句可以表示原因、时间、让步、方式或比较等含义。这些含义各有不同的表示形式。它可引导时间状语从句，表示“当……的时候”、“一……就”、“随着……”

(1)As she sang,the tears ran down her cheeks.

她一边唱，一边泪流满面。

(2)As he grew older he lost interest in everything except gardening. 

随着年纪的增大，他除了喜欢园艺外，对一切都失去了兴趣。

(3) As the floods had put the telephone out of order, we could not quickly find out the practical condition there.

由于洪水使电话线发生故障，因此我们不能很快地查清那儿的情况。
