在一些英语简单句中，部分词语隐含着某种假设，这一点通过谓语动词的虚拟语气，加上一定的背景知识就能判断出来。这种经过压缩的成分亦可通过分译和扩展来再现。如：

例7  A Britain outside the EU would suffer economically.

英国假如脱离欧盟，将会蒙受严重的经济损失。

例8  Kissinger wrote in his syndicated column that an unchecked Saddam would be able to "cause a worldwide economic crisis."

另外，有些英语词组或短语因其特殊的表达方式，在译成汉语时往往也需要将其从原句中拆离出来，然后增词以完善其结构，才能把原义完整、通顺地表达出来。如：

例9 His addition completed the list.

把他（的名字）添上，名单就完备了。

（比较：他的增加使名单完整了。）

例10  However,the very size of the country and its own traditions present limitations on the speed with which such work will be completed.

然而，由于该国地城辽阔，又有自己的传统，使完成这项工作的速度受到种种限制。
