因特网不仅可以帮助我们方便、高效地解决专业词汇问题，还可以帮助我们确定普通词语的翻译方法，弥补我们英语的不足。具体程序是：使用英英词典、百科全书确定英语词语的确切含义与用法，用同义词词典找到更确切的词，使用英语搭配词典查找词的搭配。

例1.

以往主流社会的意识形态以及一些不恰当的宣作，加大了艾滋病恐慌及人们对艾滋病病人和艾滋病病毒染者的厌恶，而无助于预防和控制艾滋病。

“宣传”在汉英词典上给出的译法不外乎propaganda, publicity, promotion, advertisement 等。promotion是促销，advertisement 是广告，显然不符合这个上下文。

Microsoft Bookshelf 给 propaganda 下的定义是：

noun the organized spreading of doctrine, true or false information, opinions, etc, especially to bring about change or reform; an association or scheme for doing this; the information, etc. spread; (with capital Propaganda) a Roman Catholic committee, founded in 1622, responsible for foreign missions and the training of missionaries.

在Encarta Encyclopedia中有更详细的解释。从中可以看出 propaganda用在这里也不合适。但这个解释给了我们提示：是否可以用false information 或 misinformation。

Misinform： verb transitive to inform or tell incorrectly or misleadingly

Misinformation的同义词还有disinformation，但它的意思是 deliberate leakage of misleading information,显然不对。
