* A cork floating on water is not swept along with the water. Rather, it moves up and down with the wave motion.

(3) 当rather与than连用时，应译为“是……而不是”、“与其……不如”等，翻译时要注意rather than前后的词序，可以顺译，也可以先翻译rather than后面的成分。如：

* The steam engine uses a fire in a boiler rather than inside the engine.

蒸汽机所利用的是锅炉中的火，而不是发动机里边的火。

9. so的译法

(1) so作为副词，表示方法、方式、情況，可译为“这样”、“那样”等，也可视上下文灵活翻译。如：

* If so, OH is not the sole contributor of basic properties.

如果是这样，OH就不是碱性的唯一提供者。

(2) 表示程度，可译为“这么”、“那么”、“如此”等，有时需灵活翻译。如： 

* The calculation of the values involves so many factors that only a computer can cope with it.

这些数值的计算包含如此多的因子，以至于只有计算机才能对付得了。

(3) 代替上下文的形容词、名词、或动词，so后面的句子要倒装，可译为“同样”、“也”等。如：

* As the molecular weights increase, so do the melting and boiling points.

随着分子量的増大，熔点和沸点也提高了。

10. too的译法

(1) 副词too作“也”讲，只用于肯定句，常译为“也”，“同样”。如：

* The spectral analysis technique works well for waves of varying amplitude, too. 

频谱分析法对幅度变化的波形也有效。
