* Where water is lacking, no plants can grow.

缺水的地方.植物不能生长。

* Where the volt is too large a unit, we use the millivolt or microvolt.

如果伏特这个单位过大，我们可用毫伏或微伏。 

3. 引导定语从句

(1) where作为关系副词，可以引导定语从句，修饰表示地点的名词。如果是限制性定语从句，通常可译为汉语的“的”字结构的短语。如：

* Few birds remain throughout the year in the place where food is hard to find.

在很难找到食物的地方没有什么鸟能常年栖息。

* Air moves from place where the pressure is high to places where the pressure is low.

空气从压力大的地方流向压力小的地方。

(2) 如果where引导非限制性定语从句，那么定语从句可分译，而where可译成 “其中”、“在那里”等。如：

* This mixture passes into the cylinder, where it is exploded and exerts force on the piston.

这种混合物进入气缸，在那里发生爆炸，从而对活塞施加力。

* Heated gas is fed to the cooler, where its temperature drops to 20°C .

热气体加到冷却器中，在那里其温度降低到20°C.
