科技和医学英语中，倍数减少的情况要比倍数增加来得少见，但误译的情况却更为普遍。

倍数减少的表示法一般是用表示减少意义的动词（如decrease，reduce，lower，lessen, shorten, decline, drop, fall, cut down 等）加上倍数，有时也可用表示减少意义的名词或形容词（副词）比较级。

英语中的倍数减少译成汉语时，不能译为“减少了……倍”或“减少到……倍”。因为“比原数减少……倍”的说法于逻辑不通，倍数减少的正确译法也有两种：

（1）減少到1/n；

（2）減少了n-1/n。

倍数减少的表示法和译法举例如下：

1. At present the time needed to complete such an operation is shortened 3 times.

目前动这种手术所需的时间比过去缩2/3。

（或：目前动这种手术所需的时间缩短到了过去的1/3。）

2. One of the principal advantages of the new X-ray machine is a four-fold reduction in weight over the old-fashioned one.

新的X线机的主要优点之一是比老式的X线机减少3/4的重量。

(或：新的X线机的主要优点之一是其重量只有老式机的1/4。)

3. The incidence of seasonal infectious diseases was lowered 3.5 times over 1959.

季节性传染病的发病率比1959年降低5/7。

(或：季节性传染病的发病率降低到了1959年的2/7。)
