淡代式风格转换是一种权宜性对策。“淡化”的实质是在确保概念意义的前提下不得已放弃（或部分放弃)风格意义。译者其所以不得不诉诸“淡化”的依据，与重建式相同，但更重要的原因是难以逾越的语言一文化障碍，其中包括：（a）具有浓郁的民族语言色彩；（b）含有很多历史典故、典籍典故，或属于民间传奇或传说；（c）有典型的、在目的语中难以理解的民族性体语或行为方式；（d）方言词语及表达法（特别是语序）惯用法；(e）语言文字结构，等等。

风格淡化的具体表现往往是以“虚”代“实”。以汉译英为例，汉语在表现法上历来是比较重实的，因此在风格翻译中应注意防止从“实”到“实”的对应式换码。英国翻译家Arthur Waley在翻译《西游记》中对汉语“实”的处理，可供我们借鉴。下段原著中带重点的词都比较实，但在英译中均已虚化：

“怎么得一个有法力的，去东土寻一个善信，教他苦历千山，询经万水，到我处求取真经，永传东土，劝化众生，却乃是个山大的福缘，海深的善庆。”（第八回）

"I wish I knew of a holy one who would go to the eastern land and find a believer who could be sent over hill and dale, all the way from China to this place. I would give him the scriptures to take back to China, and he would explain them to the people and change their hearts. That would be an untold blessing."

从上例可以看出淡化（虚化）并不意味着风格顿失。从功能的积极意义上说，技巧水平的淡化本身也是一种艺术手段，不失为风格翻译。因为风格的最终目的也就是语言的交际功能的强化。淡化的风格翻译比勉强的对应式风格换码往往略胜一筹，以下例为证：

京都涮羊肉之所以名冠全球，誉满中外，是因为它集前人制作之经验，博采众家之长，又创造了自家的风格，具有选料精、加工细、佐料全、火力旺等特色。

英译 (i)

The reason why Peking's instantboiled mutton is crowned with Number One in China as well as in the world is that it pools its predecessors' expeirence and adopts their merits in creating its own style. It is characterized by fine selecting of mutton, careful processing, all sorts of condiments and intense heating.

英译 (ii)

The fame of instant-boiled mutton in the Capital stems from a very skillful pooling of the experience gained over the past centuries in a particular way of eating mutton and creating a special style of its own characterized by the exquisiteness in mutton selecting and slicing,

condiments assorting and heat controlling.

英译（i）式是勉强为之的对应式转换（硬译），例如译语复制汉语的表现法（如叠床架屋句式“名冠全球，誉满中外”、“集前人制作经验，博采众家之长”），结果，可读性必然很差。英译（ii）式尽力淡化了原语的表达法风格，可读性略胜一筹。可见“淡化”不失为一种保证语言交际功能和强化效果的积极的艺术手段，我们应时时恪守这种功能观。
